British war planes were yesterday scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers capable of carrying nuclear missiles as they flew south of Bournemouth.
Typhoon jets on high alert were dispatched from two RAF bases and flew alongside the long-range Russian Bear aircraft until they were out of the region.
Last night experts said Vladimir Putins move to send planes capable of carrying cruise missiles so close to British shores could be seen as an act of aggression.

Hope some freepers are waking up to who Putin really is.
Thank you for your post.. didn’t see anything in our national media!
It’s my understanding that the RAF escorts them out of the North Sea, daily.
Maybe that has changed and this really IS something out of the ordinary
Even in the coldwar they very rarely traversed the south coast.
Just a grand tour of the north sea and western isles.
Putin’s at it again
Maybe that's changed now.

We used to do the same in the other direction, it was a mutual display of bravado.
Putin just is flexing his muscles over something, trying to look impressive.
Not a daily occurrence for the UK. In recent years the flights amount to about one a month. Compare that to the Cold War days and it was several times a week.
“BBC is Russian cyrillic for VVS. The BBC and letters after translate to Air Force of Russia.”
Yes, I know, which is why it was funny (peculiar), especially flying past Bournemouth.
What’s unusual here is that they were over the English Channel, a long way west, rather than their traditional approach over the North Sea.

Such patrols were used during the Cold War to evaluate the air defense systems. Putin’s current actions are being conducted in the first place as tactics of intimidation against NATO and in the second place as a means of evaluating NATO air defenses.
Yes ,yes, and yes.:)

When I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall in the late 70’s, there was a photo taken by one of our jets that tailed a Russian bomber and one of their crewmembers was shown holding up a bottle of Coca Cola in one of the side windows of the bomber near the tail. They enlarged the photo to show the details and you could read the bottle.
Russian plane flies over ocean.
PANIC!!
“Russian plane flies over ocean.
PANIC!!” — lol
My group’s F-102 fighter-interceptors used to entertain the Russian Tupelov Tu-95 BEAR crews with Playboy magazine centerfolds 45 years ago. Probably wouldn’t be as effective today.
Probably wouldn’t. Those russians who can afford, go to Monaco/Monte Carlo instead of flicking thru playboy magazine, to entertain themselves.
