In major move, Mormon apostles call for statewide LGBT protections [UT]

Top leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Tuesday for passage of laws granting statewide protections against housing and employment discrimination for gay and lesbian Utahns — as long as those measures safeguard religious freedom.

The move, one LGBT advocates have been pushing for years, provides a major boost for the prospects of nondiscrimination ordinances on Utah's Capitol Hill. Such proposals have been bottled up in the Legislature for years — despite the church's historic endorsement of similar protections in Salt Lake City ordinances in 2009.

Utah's predominant faith issued the plea for such measures at all level of government during a rare news conference, featuring three apostles — Elders Jeffrey R. Holland, Dallin H. Oaks and D. Todd Christofferson — and a high-profile women's leader, Neill Marriott, second counselor in the church's Young Women general presidency.

"We call on local, state and the federal government," Oaks said in a news release, "to serve all of their people by passing legislation that protects vital religious freedoms for individuals, families, churches and other faith groups while also protecting the rights of our LGBT citizens in such areas as housing, employment and public accommodation in hotels, restaurants and transportation — protections which are not available in many parts of the country."

Mormon officials "believe laws ought to be framed to achieve a balance," Oaks said, "in protecting the freedoms of all people, while respecting those with differing values."

So the Mormons are coming out in defense of men who like to have another man’s penis in his mouth or ass.

I guess having a bunch of wives just isn’t enough for some.

The fact that these blasphemers call themselves Christian is an insult to every real Christian out there.

. . . while also protecting the rights of our LGBT citizens in such areas as housing, employment and public accommodation in hotels, restaurants and transportation . . .

How about protection of the rights of the owners of those businesses and public accommodations to protect their other workers and customers from predatory perverts?

Another plant of our own company had just such an experience when a male worker decided he was female and, therefore, entitled to use the women's restroom.

We faced a lawsuit if we denyed him his "rights" to be recognized as a woman. We faced lawsuits from the female employees who didn't appreciate having a mentally ill guy in their restroom.

The problem was temporarily solved by turning the visitor's ladies room into his/her own private biffy and putting a sign on the door directing female visitor's to the employee's ladies room.

Don't laugh because this could be your workplace, business or other public accommodation.

Perverted theology supports perverted sexuality. What a shock. The endtimes are upon us.

Since the Mormon cult is based on heresy and conjecture, it’s not surprising that their morality stops at the water’s edge. Their latest “prophet” probably had a LGBT revelation!

Does no one here read the source material for themselves? The SLTRIB is a pro gay anti Mormon rag.

Here's the “rest of the story.”

"Mormon officials "believe laws ought to be framed to achieve a balance," Oaks said, "in protecting the freedoms of all people, while respecting those with differing values."

Well Mr. Oaks, since the LDS have been slowly hand feeding the crocodiles these past few years, I'm afraid you're about to find out who much "respect" you will get from those whose "differing values" are the opposite of yours.

Don’t be deceived. The LDS church likes to look “inclusive,” and put these rules on everyone else, but in reality, that little phrase, “those measures safeguard religious freedoms” carries an exemption for themselves and church-owned businesses.

Even CNN did a better job with the story. The SLTRIB just reeks.

“When religious people are publicly intimidated, retaliated against, forced from employment or made to suffer personal loss because they have raised their voice in the public square, donated to a cause or participated in an election, our democracy is the loser,” said Elder Dallin Oaks, a member of the church's Quorum of Twelve Apostles.

“Such tactics are every bit as wrong as denying access to employment, housing or public services because of race or gender.”

The Mormon church is one of several religious groups to complain about religious freedom coming under “attack” in recent years. The Catholic church and Southern Baptists, among other evangelicals, have sounded the alarm as well.

Oaks cited several examples on Tuesday, including:

The mayor of Houston subpoenaing sermon notes last year from pastors who opposed an equal rights ordination. The subpoena was later dropped.
Public pressure on a Mormon gymnast to step down as an Olympic liaison in 2011 because he had supported California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in 2008.
In 2014, Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich was forced to resign because he had donated money to support the passage of Prop 8.

“It is one of today's great ironies that some people who have fought so hard for LGBT rights now try to deny the rights of others to disagree with their public policy proposals,” said Oaks.

“It is one of today's great ironies that some people who have fought so hard for LGBT rights now try to deny the rights of others to disagree with their public policy proposals,” said Oaks.

I would submit that Mr. Oaks and the organization he is speaking for are either obtuse or extremely naive if they do not understand what the LGBT agenda is truly about...

Sorry Mr. Oaks, you cannot "make nice" with these people.

“as long as those measures safeguard religious freedom”

Bwhahahahahaha! That’s a good one.

The Mormons haven’t figured out yet that the entire homo campaign is just a hammer designed to smash religious freedom?

From your source:

“At the same time, the Church said it would support legislation where it is being sought to provide protections in housing, employment and some other areas where LGBT people do not have protections, while ensuring that religious freedom was not compromised.”

So there is no essential difference to the stories that I can see.
