Anti-H-1B senator to head immigration panel - claims shortage of highly skill labor a 'hoax'
Computer World ^ | January 22, 2015 | Patrick Thibodeau

..............[U.S. Senator Jeff] Sessions last week accused the tech industry of perpetuating a "hoax" by claiming there is a shortage of qualified U.S. tech workers.

"The tech industry's promotion of expanded temporary visas -- such as the H-1B -- and green cards is driven by its desire for cheap, young and immobile labor," wrote Sessions, in a memo he sent last week to fellow lawmakers.

Last summer, Sessions attacked Microsoft's push for more H-1B visas as it laid off 18,000 employees. Now, as subcommittee chairman, Sessions will have the ability to conduct investigations and hold oversight hearings.

That Senate memo was Sessions' rebuttal to efforts by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, who is seeking an H-1B increase.

The contrast between Sessions and Hatch on this issue could not be sharper. Hatch said, "Our high-skilled worker shortage has become a crisis." Sessions, meanwhile, responded: "Not only is there no shortage of qualified Americans ready, able, and eager to fill these jobs, there is a huge surplus of Americans trained in these fields who are unable to find employment."

Hatch introduced legislation, with the support of some Democratic lawmakers, to raise the H-1B cap from 85,000 to 195,000. But the bill creates what may be an unlimited influx of foreign workers by eliminating a cap on people who earn an advanced degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) field from a U.S. school. The IEEE-USA says the bill will destroy the U.S. tech workforce.

Many people who graduate with STEM degrees don't get jobs in the field. An Economic Policy Institute study last year found that the supply of STEM graduates exceeds by 2-to-1 the number of graduates who get hired.

I worked in engineering and engineering management for 30 years. There is no shortage of qualified STEM candidates per se. However, the best ones are hard to get unless you want to pay the price.

There are a plethora of H1-B candidates whose main goal in life is to find a position that will let them stay here and progress towards citizenship, and they will take less money on the path there. I’ve had two or three as employees in the past. When they get what they wanted (citizenship), they’re gone.

Yes.yes.yes. Thank you Jeff Sessions!

Those of us in the IT industry have always known it. Stop H1B!

We have been overrun and outsourced to the point there are few jobs available to us now, not because our inabilities but because of big IT looking for throw away cheap labor.

They care only about the immediate return of dollars and not their on future, they will bury themselves as they have nearly buried the American worker.

Lower corporate taxes and hire Americans. Pretty simple solution.

One of the very few areas where Ted Cruz is very wrong, Jeff Sessions is very right.

“Other members of the Sessions subcommittee will be: Sens. David Perdue (R-GA)—who signed the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) pledge against amnesty on the campaign trail—full Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT) and Thom Tillis (R-NC). Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, will also serve on the subcommittee under Sessions. “

Not sure I see where your beef with Ted Cruz is over this?

As a long time IT worker and manager, I don’t blame the Indians, Chinese, Koreans, etc. for doing all they can to work in the US. Having worked with literally hundreds of them, I find that their real goal is to escape the 3rd world ratholes back home and bring as many of their family to the US as they can. They work cheaper, longer hours, never ever complain and for the most part are ideal workers from the company perspective. But hundreds of thousands of Americans cannot find a job because of this system. Common fact that Hillary Clinton has taken big donations from the offshoring firms. Hopefully Sessions can stop this from expanding.

Skill/Cost

Foreign labor is adequate all things considered. Domestic labor is far superior foregoing cost.

That said, I think it makes sense to balance imports and exports by whatever means.

This is all being driven by The likes of Zuckerman, Gates and other Industry Owners wanting to suppress the wages in the STEM fields so they can use more of their Corp. income to buy crooked politicians to push
their Socialist agendas.

I read a report the other day that incomes in those fields have stagnated wages for 7+ years. Is there any wonder why kids don’t enter those areas of study?

I hadn’t seen that. Thank you.

Perhaps I need to pay closer attention to Mr. Cruz.

Agreed. But we are not going to get a Messiah. Cruz overall has the right underlying principles on most everything else. In this case he might have bought into the lies that we don't have the tech base here. We do. Employers don't want to pay U.S. market rate. They want to bring Pakistan and India here and pay that rate.

I have been reviewing that post.

It appears it is an old article, which was recently posted. It may be a reflection of something or not. The article appears to be from 2013.

Not sure. I think it is interesting data, but am still pro-Cruz.

However it is apparently real. I agree with you, Cruz is overall good, perhaps. Everyone is sold out, sad to say.

I hadn't noticed the original date. Good catch. Sessions is the kind of guy who can straighten Cruz out on this. I'm pretty much committed to Cruz, Walker or Pence, depending on who catches fire. Each has strengths and weaknesses. Any of them can be HRC or Warren.
