The Megyn Kelly Moment
NY Times Magazine ^ | 1/21/2015 | Jim Rutenberg

Posted on 01/21/2015 9:06:45 PM PST by iowamark

On a gray Wednesday in November, the Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and four producers gathered around a conference table on the 17th floor of the News Corporation building in Manhattan...

Slated for the D block was Jonathan Gilliam, a former Navy SEAL...

For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, a Megyn moment, as I have taken to calling it, is when you, a Fox guest — maybe a regular guest or even an official contributor — are pursuing a line of argument that seems perfectly congruent with the Fox worldview, only to have Kelly seize on some part of it and call it out as nonsense, maybe even turn it back on you. You don’t always know when, how or even if the Megyn moment will happen; Kelly’s political sensibility and choice of subjects are generally in keeping with that of the network at large. But you always have to be ready for it, no matter who you are. Neither Karl Rove nor Dick Cheney have been spared their Megyn moments, nor will the growing field of 2016 presidential aspirants, who can look forward to two years of interrogation on “The Kelly File.” The Megyn moment has upended the popular notion of how a Fox News star is supposed to behave, and led to the spectacle of a Fox anchor winning praise from the very elites whose disdain Fox has always welcomed. In the process, Kelly’s program has not just given America’s top-rated news channel its biggest new hit in 13 years; it has demonstrated an appeal to the younger and (slightly) more ideologically diverse demographic Fox needs as it seeks to claim even more territory on the American journo-political landscape.

Obviously, don’t watch her show... I love all of these critics that have no about her or her show...heh.

You really need to re-think your statements or at least watch a few shows before stating your opinions. Geez, I would have though that I was watching MSNBC reading your comments... Come on now, get real and honest at least.

Megyn Kelly understands that you're supposed to ask difficult questions, and somebody as smart as Dick Cheney knows how to answer them.

A person who really has an ideology -- as opposed to a moron like the pResident, who only has a bunch of worthless tropes, clichés and nostrums -- understands why he believes the things he believes, and has life experiences that have taught him why the beliefs work and when they work. He welcomes difficult questions because difficult questions are far more effective at bringing your point home to doubters and skeptics than softball questions are.

I would way rather have Megyn Kelly ask hard questions than listen to Sean Hannity's endless not-even-rhetorical "Have you ever heard of anything this bad in your life?" setups any day of the week.

Sorry, but if you have never watched her show, then you really shouldn’t be commenting about her... Sorry, but really, that is true...

She is one of the only fact filled shows on TV today and I love to watch. She challenges all comers, both Democrats and Republicans...love it.

Really, if you want a taste of factual reporting, watch!@

Of course there was the Meghyn moment with Newt. Or was it a Newt moment. LOL!

Major difference... Hard news vs political commentary.

Hey, the French deny it...so who are you going to believe?

Actually, I think it is a police thing but who knows...

I agree. Sean is predictable. His show is not helped by his frequent on-air flirting or baiting for more compliments about himself from women callers. I understand that it takes a big ego to keep a talk show going, and egos need to be fed, or made to think they’re being fed.

I was very glad when his radio show changed the intro theme and dropped the Cowboy voice singing “We’ll Put A Boot In Your Ass, It’s The American Way!” That’s not something I want to hear five times a week.

Its probably on You Tube from the 2012 GOP debates where Meghyn Kelly decided to have a Meghyn minute with Newt and he took her to school on the judiciary. It was hysterical.

I don't think either one of them is doing hard news.

And when they're doing what's supposed to be an interview, neither one of them is doing the interviewee any favors by throwing softballs or asking setup questions.

And there is nothing wrong with that. If you ask what you think are challenging questions of a gifted rhetorician you are occasionally going to be body slammed.

Probably right but hard news is so spoungable these days... Actually, there is no HARD news, but sometimes we have to agree that some news is hard (truth) but you’re probably right, we no longer have hard news...so I agree with that part.

(Spoungable may be a made up word but it fits).

I am a musician. Anytime I’m impressed with a performance, it’s not about their political affiliation. She boosted an aging performer’s appearance with grace and style. I may watch her after your comment, but as I said, it was my first exposure to her. Many singers at my local level have impressed me. Even in my old age I sometimes carry a tune, mostly with a double reed Echo Harp.

The French deny it? The Mayor of Paris hardly represents all French. Besides I found links to French TV documentaries on the subject, aired by networks TF-1 and channel 3.

I assume that you are talking about the no-go zones? These zones have been talked about for years but now the locals deny them - not really sure what to make of this.

I’m sure that there are areas that the police will not go willingly but that they deny it is telling...
