WILMINGTON, N.C. - An Air Force veteran who served in Kuwait found a note on her car Friday criticizing her for parking in a veterans-only parking spot in Wilmington.

Mary Claire Caine told WECT-TV that she returned to her car from shopping at Harris Teeter to find a note plastered to her front window from a person identifying themselves as a "Wounded Vet."

It read, "Maybe [you] can't read the sign you parked in front of ... This space is reserved for those who fought for America ... not you. Thanks, Wounded Vet."

Caine, who served in Kuwait and on the flight line of the F-117 Nighthawk, said her heart sank.

Vet’s usually have some sort of sticker on their car with the service ...

Not really.

My uncle, husband and FIL are all retired military. No stickers. There are about 15 other vets in my extended family. I think maybe one has a sticker and that is because he still works at Wright-Patterson.

Naw. Don’t have the disposable income I used to. If I can’t purchase I don’t go.

I have. What’s your point? Is there some law requiring me to put a sticker on my car that I’m not aware of?

It can go either way. Maybe someone can take a poll of all the vets that have served and are still alive and driving whether or not they have any service sticker or war sticker or veteran plates. Just go to a gun show sometime and check the parking lot ...

You understand my seemingly “misplaced” contempt... and expressed it perfectly with, “Don’t need another protected class, and there is no law against parking there.”

Good grief. I mentioned a simple statement regarding that woman parking in a vets spot and all of a sudden ....

Absolutely. If someone is genuinely handicapped, use the designated spots set aside for that purpose; the law is already on your side.

I saw one of these “Reserved for Veterans” parking spots awhile back and pulled right in. Hell, I’d never seen one before so I even took a picture of the sign through the windshield to show the wife.

I was hobbling toward the store when a very nice old lady kindly asked me if I was limping because of the war. She’d seen me park in the spot.

“Actually, ma’am, I jammed my toe into a box when I was getting up to let the cat out late last night”, I was quick to reply, not wanting any sympathy I hadn’t earned.

Her expression instantly turned to disgust. “You awful man, how does that make you a Veteran?”

After a moment’s perplexed shock, I laughed so hard I thought I might bust a gut. She stomped into the store to rat me out to the manager, but no one ever questioned me on it, and I’d have gladly shown them my retired ID card if they had. When she saw me in the store she glared at me, and I was going to let her know I had been a Marine in OIF, but all I could do when I saw that sour look was laugh until I almost cried.

If looks could kill, she’d have buried me on the spot.

She takes a note like that seriously enough to inform the media? She is too thin-skinned, maybe that’s why they didn’t believe she was a veteran

I don't know ... why do you dislike this woman?

At the moment, I dislike the individual that left the note on her car.

She went and cried to the media over a note, that’s pretty pathetic

But how do you enforce as sign like that?

You don't. It's not mandated by the State, it's Harris Teeter simply trying to do a good deed.

You a vet? Park there. A wounded vet? They have handicapped spots.

that’s pretty pathetic

Sure ... appointing oneself the 'Parking Spot Police' is even more pathetic.

That was kind of my point.

Gun shows are a whole different ball game as the sellers being veterans is a plus for them.

She made it into a female thing - the note writer screwed the pooch by jumping to conclusions then she opted to show which way she votes by turning it into a sexist deal vs. a mistaken identity. Hope she gets a flat next time she uses such a spot.

I’d dislike finding a note on my car for any reason other than someone being honest about damaging it.

But, I also dislike all the special parking that makes it nearly impossible to get in and out of a retail establishment quickly, particularly grocery stores. The federally mandated handicap spaces alone are far above and beyond the actual number of individuals who could use them.

I get a sense of preachy feminism that’s just as off-putting as a preachy note-writer making bad assumptions, too.

A lot to dislike about this.

I’d just show them right shoulder, a little gift I received in 1971. I don’t run a Purple Heart plate on my truck or Vietnam Vet stickers on my truck, hell I don’t even have a VA sticker on my windshield. My response to anybody who questioned my service would be short and sweet. “XXXX off”!

Every year I do a couple of hunts on the ranch for Vet’s only started during Desert Storm and I will continue until I no longer can. With luck my daughters (oldest is a Vet) will continue the same tradition. So I guess it’s obvious I don’t give a rat’s arse how it sit’s with you. Add in the fact that we have grand children and the wife and I are both senior citizens and we may need to double that rat.

I think the most awkward situation is when I’m coming through a base gate and a military guard will say “thank you for your service.” after checking me through. I thank them right back...what the hell else is there to say?

I never walked around thanking my buddies and coworkers for their service...nor they to me...

I’ve been out a little over 11 years now...and I still get a bit rattled by it.

Thank you for serving as well AII...I hope you enjoyed your time in as much as I did.

Were you referring to the base vehicle registration stickers that are normally placed in the lower left hand corner of the windshield? If so, ok, I see what you’re saying. But many installations have stopped requiring those in the past few years.

I think folks may have took it as a generalization towards vets and some don’t like that, right, wrong or indifferent.

I was just saying I don’t “advertise”, I see many that do. Some that more than make up for many of us who don’t.

It’s simply a matter of preference.
