Interstate 84 semi-truck crash: Crushed by 2 big rigs, he walks out with 2 Band-Aids

Sometimes the picture says it all.

For Kaleb Whitby, the picture says a little too much.

He'd rather not think about it — the semi-trucks flattening his Chevy Silverado like a panini press.

Amid the tangled steel after the predawn crash near Baker City sat Whitby: intact, trapped and full of questions.

"Thank God that I'm still alive," Whitby said. "Now I've got to go figure out why."

That’s my credo on the road, too. Stay away from big rigs as much as possible. Never ever get between two of them.

In parking lots or gas stations, I will not stand in front of or behind a car with the engine running. And I’ll never stand behind my parked car if the car behind me has the engine running.

As an important note, if you or someone you know is caught in a crushing type accident, even if they think they are “still solid”, they need close to a CAT scan diagnosis to know for sure. They might be “walking wounded” and not know it, in some cases until they just drop dead.

Well, this isn’t so bad.

I thought it would be a lot worse than this.

They’ll be able to buff this out.

Oh, yeah.

And visa-versa.

Never drive behind, in front, or next to a semi — not for any longer than absolutely necessary.

Never say never. One blazing hot summer afternoon, I stayed in the shadow of a big rig for about 200 miles on southbound I/5.

Got big waves and grins from the guys in the truck when we finally went our separate ways...

Not for nothing was the Chevy Silverado named the “Motor Trend Truck Of The Year.”

alongside a big tandem or triple truck.

You should not be hanging out there, your wife is right. If you have to pass one of us, please do so; but don’t sit next to us - we might need that space. When I see people doing that I wonder how they survived to adulthood.

In front or behind is fine as long as you give us some space, along side of us is the danger zone.

I wasn’t cruising beside them, I was passing, but it takes a few seconds to go by the triples and even the 54 footers if the traffic is even moderate.

Yeah. Once upon a time at a gas station in Pasadena, I saw the remains of a red car that ‘some lady was driving down hill, lost control and wrapped it around a tree’.

It looked like it had been crushed like an accordion, given a half twist and pulled apart.

When’s the funeral? I asked.

‘She walked away.’

WHAT?

‘Go take a closer look at the car’.

I did. there wasn’t a flat piece of sheet metal bigger than my hand anywhere to be seen. I have no idea what make and model car it was. In the midst of this sea of devastation, there were two pristine items: The driver’s seat, and the steering wheel.

Wow, says I, When it’s not your time, it’s not your time.

‘yeah.’ says the gas station attendant...

Or alleged Smart car...

Not a fan of Smart cars, but I’ve seen the aftermath of two of them wrecked, and was astounded. The first one rear ended a Camry on the San Diego Freeway - the Camry had to be towed, the Smart car drove away.

The other one was in Anaheim, woman failed to negotiate a railroad crossing, properly, hit a moving train, and walked away from the crash.

Not saying I would buy one, just my observations . . .

When I did it, I watched the road ahead for any situation that might cause the King of the Road to need my lane. Dropped back as needed, let other drivers go around as desired, but otherwise stuck to the shade.

It was clear to the big rig driver and his assistant that I was actively engaged, not asleep at the switch beside them.

They acted as if it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen.

All my subsequent cars have had air-conditioning, though...

It was a bit nerve wracking.
