Sometimes the picture says it all.
For Kaleb Whitby, the picture says a little too much.
He'd rather not think about it the semi-trucks flattening his Chevy Silverado like a panini press.
Amid the tangled steel after the predawn crash near Baker City sat Whitby: intact, trapped and full of questions.
"Thank God that I'm still alive," Whitby said. "Now I've got to go figure out why."
Just think if he had been driving a Prius? Priuside.
Or a Volt.
Dang.
I think that guy should go to church today. Somebody upstairs was taking care of him.
Very lucky - head for the nearest casino, pal.
Spam in a can.
Or alleged Smart car, woud have had to bury him in it.
Wow ... quite amazing!
“Thank God that I’m still alive,” Whitby said. “Now I’ve got to go figure out why.
The truck bore down on him.]
After the semi slammed into him, Whitby opened his eyes to the sight of shattered glass. The steering column was lodged in his right hip.
He was upright again and still in the driver’s seat. But the truck as he knew it was gone.
“I just kept telling myself to calm down,” Whitby said.
He took out his Leatherman pocketknife to cut away his seat belt and dislodge the steering column from his side....
About 30 minutes after flipping his truck, Whitby was free and among the sea of others who had largely escaped serious injury..
“I’ve got two Band-Aids on my right ring finger,” he said. “And a little bit of ice on my left eye.
OMG...and Amen.
It means that GM built the truck properly, with the safety structure of the cab in mind.
Jesu, I’d better hope my wife doesn’t see this on TV. She’s one of those “Watch out for” females who can sometimes drive you nuts when on the road - especially when alongside a big tandem or triple truck.
That guy’s Guardian Angel was working overtime.
We have suggestions ranging from the guy should go to church and the guy should go to a casino.
Maybe Chevy should use this for safety endorsements.
Squashed like a bug, but protected by his trusty Silverado, he walks away.
Kinda puts a different perspective on those truck commercials where Sam Elliot’s voice is waxing Texas lawman tough over those rugged, well-built vehicles that can go anywhere.
Maybe he should split the difference and go to bingo.
Never drive behind, in front, or next to a semi — not for any longer than absolutely necessary.
