The famed French weekly Charlie Hebdo has continued to draw a somewhat contradictory reaction across the Muslim world.
Many Muslims have expressed disgust at the deadly assault on the magazines Paris office by Islamic extremists who killed 12 people. However, many also remain deeply offended by the magazines record of publishing cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad. Those passions were further inflamed this week when the magazines first issue following the attack carried a cover cartoon depicting Muhammad holding a Je Suis Charlie sign.
According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammadeven a respectful oneis considered blasphemous.
In the West African nation of Niger, President Mahamadou Issoufou said at least 10 people have been killed after violent protests broke out against the latest cartoon depicting Muhammad in the French publication.

It’s not enough for publications to just rattle off, “Je suis Charlie Hebdou”:
You have to PRINT the Mohammed caricature.
My prediction is that NO publications are going to be doing that in the future, meaning that the West will have been silenced —the attackers’ objective.
Either that or they really hate cartoons
Muzzies! F**k em!
Like IowaHawk says, they hate cartoons and we elect ‘em.
Roiled? I love it!! The rugheads are getting roiled!
Killing people over cartoons. And these are the folks obama is twisting himself in knots to defend..
Muslims doing what Muslims always do and pretending to blame the cover of a satire rag
And to the Muslims, I say: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzvNPq_5P2g
Alright, I can’t stand it anymore.
Could we please stop calling them “cartoons” and call them the proper noun - comic, funny, whatever.
A cartoon is a film.
Off my soapbox.
If you are going to rant, you need to get your facts straight first. ‘Cartoon’ has been used for political drawing for many decades, long before ‘cartoon films’ were ever invented.
I have more than once suggested that as lovers of free speech we should see these cartoons in full in every newspaper of consequence, every news channel, every newsmagazine worthy of the name.
We should give these ragheads so many targets they don’t know who to bomb. Rhen if they do try, track them down and leave their hometown a smoking rubble. Might have to do it two ir three times, but send a message.
Consider the word cartoonist. A person who draws cartoons.
They were called “cartoons” when they appeared in the newspapers, originally, and the word “cartoon” itself refers to the heavy paper (from “carton”) that the first of such types were drawn on (for “modello” production) before newspapers were widespread.
The film versions are called “animated cartoons”.
Maybe, just maybe if muzzie’s respected other religions and didn’t try to exterminate them then perhaps their sacred false prophet Mad Mo would not garner all the ridiculed attention via cartoons.
This has nothing to do with the content of the drawings. Islam considers any depiction of Mohammed to be blasphemy and forbids all figurative drawing in general.
Are we going to shut down everything, close our presses, close our museums, rip the statues out of our churches, and cut off the hands of artists to gratify Islam? That’s the question.
If they had a clue how stupid they seem to the rest of the world, they might get over it.
But probably not.
People can always draw leaves.
