Pope Francis: 'You cannot make fun of the faith of others'
The Telegraph ^ | 1/15/2015 | Nick Squires

Pope Francis has weighed into the debate over freedom of expression in the wake of the religious attacks in Paris, saying that anyone who insults a religion can expect a "punch in the nose".

...

He said "If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother [Mary?], he can expect a punch in the nose."

Throwing a pretend punch, the Pope said: "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

“I don’t think Muslims have such a concept.”

Indeed: last time “cartoons about Mohammed” made the news, many Muslims interviewed were surprised that Christians would not likewise violently retaliate against the Pope being similarly insulted. Concerns me that the current Pope _would_ (and admits it) violently retaliate against his mother receiving such treatment. Which axiom does he hold?

If he were merely observing the human propensity toward weakness/sin of lashing out at endearing targets of bullying, and including himself as just another base sinful human, fine ... but I’m not quite sure that’s what he meant. Sounds too much like excusing/condoning the Charlie terrorists (btw, do we have a proper term for them yet?).

Yes, I agree. I do believe the proper term for them is Douche Canoe.

But the people who craft the cartoons at Charlie Hebdo have mocked the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob in the past along with mocking Islam and Mohammed.
_________________________________________________________ I am a Roman Catholic. I don’t like it when people insult my faith, Mary and the Holy Father. I think the Pope was saying that he doesn’t like it when the world mocks our faith.

I don’t like it, but since I got sober I haven’t clobbered any protestant during a religious debate.

What people can do and what people should do are two different things, and Pope Francis should know that.

“...then be willing to have your own religion be mocked in the name of going full-bore on free speech.”

We already are willing, we’ve been willing for centuries, and nothing has changed. Mock away.

You seem to have this silly notion that we should be required to join in and mock everyone, but I think the fact that you are the only person embracing that idea might tell you something about how sensible it is.

Think we can assume god has a sense of humor. After all he has put up with us for thousands of years.

All the guy was trying to say is that while it might be legal to make fun of another religion, it is not polite. And we should be polite.

No, the Pope was saying that physical violence was an appropriate response to someone exercising his Freedom of Speech.

By mentioning "punching someone in the nose," he trivialized the massacres in Paris.

I don't care if someone views Islam as a "cult of death" or as an acceptable form of religion - any physical violence initiated because someone takes offense at the utterances of others is simply unacceptable.

Regards,

I never said I made rules for you.

Re-read what you originally wrote.

You make up rules as they suit you.

I think people are making way too much of this.

All the guy was trying to say is that while it might be legal to make fun of another religion, it is not polite. And we should be polite.

I agree we should attempt when possible to live peaceable with all mean, but I can't find a Biblical commandment to be polite. If I am wrong, can someone please show me chapter and verse on this?

I'm a little tired of Christianity meaning going around with a pious smile and never offending anyone.... ever... or else you aren't Christian. A lot of folks in the Bible (John the Baptist, Jesus dealing with the pharisees, Elijah etc. had all the subtlety of a nine-pound sledge. It's getting to the point you can quote what the Bible says on most subjects and people reel back in horror with someone akin to :”How dare you say that, that's not nice and Christians should be nice.”

We either go full bore on free speech and say “Je suis Charlie” or we don’t. It is as simple as that...

That is your rule.

“”You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.””

His definition of “faith” has to be a lot different from our definition. Their faith is to slay, slaughter, crucify, behead, shoot everyone who doesn’t behave as they do. No thanks!

Matthew 5:39 - “But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”

Romans 12:14 - “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”

Matthew 5 - “Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Need more?

Note that being polite does not mean not offending.

I agree. Jesus publically insulted the religious leaders when he told them, "You are of your father, the Devil."

"An open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed." Proverbs 27:5
