Pope Francis: 'You cannot make fun of the faith of others'
The Telegraph ^ | 1/15/2015 | Nick Squires

Pope Francis has weighed into the debate over freedom of expression in the wake of the religious attacks in Paris, saying that anyone who insults a religion can expect a "punch in the nose".

...

He said "If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother [Mary?], he can expect a punch in the nose."

Throwing a pretend punch, the Pope said: "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

One of my favorite Bible stories is in 2 Kings Chapter 2 when the prophet Elisha cursed some 42 small children for making fun of him being bald-headed and a couple of bears came and ripped them to pieces.

.

If their ‘faith’ is false, why not? - Paul did exactly that in Athens.

How do you know that they would want to know the Lord?

I don’t. But I know that I would. And it is “do unto others as YOU would have them do unto YOU.”

Indeed, Jesus told the truth about false gods (the god that the Pharisees and Sadducees were peddling - their warped view and teachings about God). The false god the Pharisees and Sadducees were peddling was a twisting of the scriptures about the true God that Jesus was teaching about.

Same God, but Jesus had Him right, while they didn’t. Nonetheless, by getting it wrong, what the Pharisees and Sadducees were doing was in effect peddling a false god.

But I don’t remember Jesus ever mocking any god. I don’t believe that doing so will lead anyone to hell, but if you are going to do this, then be willing to have your own religion be mocked in the name of going full-bore on free speech.

Did Jesus say (John 13:34-35) “Love one another as I have loved you”?

If so, was He saying this just about/concerning our brothers and sisters in the Lord -— or everyone?

In Luke 6:32 he said “If you only love those who love you, what reward is there for you in heaven?”

So all of this lines up with “So in everything, do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

You either go full bore, or you don’t. There is no in between.

Those people do crack me up.

Remember the flowers that were sold on the road side by them in their orange robes?

Or was that someone other faith that sold flowers?

Read you Bible. Elijah openly mocked the priests of Baal saying things like “maybe your god can’t hear because you aren’t being loud enough” and laughing at them at this big festival type of thing.he was a true prophet and he didn’t hide behind being polite.

I don’t think Muslims have such a concept. Which added to their definition of “insult to religion” means quite a few noses are going to get punched by them. So we just better shut up I guess. (That last was Sarcasm writ large).

Here is my big problem with what the Pope said. Yes it is wrong to go beyond satire into the scatological when discussing or lampooning or debating a religion. It is wrong because civilized people who want there to be free and open faith in their society should be civil. We should be able to weigh pros and cons truthfully and have answers to those who throw objections at us. This is adult behavior. When you sink to the level of bandying gross insults at each other the listening stops.

This is true even if it does not provoke a reaction. If we are supposed to determine the rightness of a behavior by whether it makes people angry, we Christians should plan on shutting up right now. You see the Gospel lays out some hard truths that people just plain don’t want to hear. It might be because the whole idea of needing salvation does not sit well. It might be because the idea of Christ being divine is blasphemy to them. It might be because the very thought of there being a Holy Trinity smacks of polytheism. It might be because the moral behavior demanded by Scripture interferes with the altar of personal pleasure they worship at. It is often just too much to ponder.

Doesn’t really matter. What matters is ever since Jesus gave so many their comeuppance Christianity has been stirring up reactions. Reactions which were often not very favorable to the faithful. Whippings, burnings, beheadings, imprisonments, the list is long. It is still long. Every age of Christian must ask “What price am I willing to pay to declare the Gospel?”

That the Pope does not see how his remark could mean for us to hush up about it already, really worries me.

Western Christianity has devolved into a three (thousand) ring circus. Eastern Orthodox church is not so fractured. Franklin Graham has more sense in his little finger than the curia.

So one person saying this abut him automatically makes Francis a Pope of the common man and not the rich and powerful?

That is truly using mere anecdotal evidence and very limited anecdotal evidence at that.

As I said to another person, if anyone has any info on Pope Francis publicly supporting socialism or communism I would be really interested in seeing it.

Wrong. This is America. We can make fun of anyone, any time, anywhere. That’s the point.

Christ did NOT physically assault Sadducees nor Pharisees for insulting, or even attacking, Him. Rather, He directed “turn the other cheek” in cases where someone is insulting/bullying.
The Pope, on the other hand, seems to condone punching someone out for insulting his mother.

I always knew that the Pope was the Defender of the Faith. I just didn’t realize that the “Faith” was Islam.

I think people are making way too much of this.

All the guy was trying to say is that while it might be legal to make fun of another religion, it is not polite. And we should be polite.

How is this even news?
.....................................

ITS NEWS BECAUSE HE IS DEFENDING DEMONS WHO BEHEAD AND ASSASSINATE THOSE WHO DISAGREE WITH THEM!!!!!!!

Hard to believe he has defenders, especially here.
Wow...just plain wow!

Does the Pope not realize that when Muslims DENY who Christ is...belittle Him as just a man rather than the Son of God...deny the crucifixion...call His resurrection a LIE...they are doing something FAR WORSE than what Charlie Hebdo did to Muhammad?

In essence, the stance that Muslims have towards Christ is FAR MORE insulting than making fun of Muhammad....yet he (the Pope) doesn't seem to understand (nor do many Christians) that its an insult.

In the grand scheme of things...which is worse: Making a derogatory cartoon about a man, Muhammad, or denying the God of the Universe and His only begotten Son...Jesus Christ.

When ANY Christian leader or anyone who claims to be a Christian gets that connection....then I will give them an audience and an ear. But right now, the Pope and some other Christian leaders seem to think its a bigger crime to make fun of Islam than it is to deny the very nature of God....and who scripture makes CLEAR is the ONLY way....the ONLY truth...and the ONLY life....and that NO ONE....not Muslim...not Baptist...not Catholic...not ANYONE...comes to the Father EXCEPT through HIM!
