Russia’s battered economy - Hardly tottering by
The Economist ^ | 17 Jan 15 | Unknown

JUDGING by the lack of economic news in Russia’s media, a crisis has arrived. Just as in Soviet days, state television does not report facts, it conceals them. The official picture is dominated by the war in Ukraine (fuelled by America), Ukraine’s economic collapse (ignored by America) and Russia’s achievements in sport, ballet and other spheres (envied by America). But whereas television does not mention the economy, ordinary Russians have been busily changing roubles into dollars, buying anything that has not gone up in price and making contingency plans. <

----------------------------------------------------------

The government’s Zen-like calm betrays a lack of strategy. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, is shown on television receiving positive reports from regional the first time since Mr Putin came to power in 2000.

------------------------------------------------------

The Kremlin hopes to ride out the crisis, as it did in 2008-09 when GDP contracted by 7.5%. Then the government was able to stimulate demand by increasing public spending and saving indebted firms. It no longer has that option. Russia’s reserves are lower than they were four years ago and may last only for a year and a half, at best. Worse, the government has lost credibility. An increase in interest rates to 17% in December was intended to defend the rouble, but it has not worked. Russians have lost faith in the currency and are starting to withdraw deposits, argues Natalia Orlova, chief economist at Alfa Bank

Putinism may be fine at propping up the personal rule of a vainglorious former KGB agent, an arch criminal turned president for life. But as a form of government it’s proving to be just another aberrant form of self-serving kleptocracy. It has a veneer of pseudo conservative rhetoric designed to appeal to conservatives in name only, yet the absence of the rule of law and property rights make it just one more example of why statism fails every time. Lord Acton said "Power corrupts. Abolute power corrupts absolutely." Putinism only corrupts.

Just as in the US, state television does not report facts, it conceals them.

Fixed it.

You think there is no opposition press in the USA? Do you fear posting on this site?

Do you fear posting on this site?

That's not the point.

The point is the gov doesn't fear any posting on this site nor anything written in the "opposition" press.

We're simply on the margins and are largely ignored even by the GOP.

Do you think anyone in DC is afraid of an editorial in the WSJ or IBD?

That's laughable.

Rush can rant until the cows come home, it doesn't matter because he's locked in a corral and has only limited influence, again even w/i the GOP.

The "truth" eg like real economic data, is held hostage by a power structure that only releases "news" that advances their narrative.

Anyone that poses a real threat is quickly introduced to the IRS.

The Left used to call the USA a sham democracy. Perhaps you agree with them.

If congress passes laws and the president refuses to enforce them; what good are the laws?

If high gov. officials brazenly break the clear letter of the law and yet are not only not called to account but instead prosper; what good are the laws?

If the people hold an election that repudiates the president's policies and the first act of the new congress is to validate the president's policies; what good was the election?

Feel free to put your faith in laws & elections, but I'm investing in lead and land.

At the end of the day, all we have is laws. You rightly point out that Obama doesn't respect them. I won't abandon laws and elections because Obama perverts them. On the contrary, I'll demand all the more that he follow them. So while I understand your opinion, I don't agree in claiming or implying that the USA is no better than Putinstan. We're gaining ground on Obama and his supporters and I won't succumb to defeatism.

Or search Ukraine holodomor for that matter. Communists and Russian chauvinists still haven't come to grips with the horrors they inflicted on the “kulaks” and the people of Ukraine.

Yup, there are always those here who are willing to regurgitate Putin’s talking points. Apparently Ukraine should always be a playground for Russia’s troops.

We're gaining ground on Obama

W/ who?

Boehner? McConnell?

We got 25 votes against Boehner even after it was known he was going to fold to Obama. 25 votes.

Read about the collapse of the Roman Republic. Do you think it would have made one whit of difference if Pompey would have defeated Caeser; or perhaps Sulla would have been a man of the people? Hell, when Octavian assumed power he assured the Senate that he was going to restore the Republic. And he continued to issue such assurances through out his reign.

Boehner & McConnell are really for real going to halt the Obama train. Really.

You have 25 votes in a 400 seat legislature. Good luck w/ that.
