What if African Americans were as politically unified as our racial attitudes make us appear to be? Suppose, for instance, we did more than believe that racial discrimination exists but actually used our political and economic muscle to remedy race-specific problems?
There are 42 million African Americans in this country with a combined purchasing power expected to hit $1.1 trillion this year. If Black America were an actual nation state instead of just a shaky state of mind, it would have a population slightly less than Spains and rank as the 46th-richest nation in the world, according to a statistical profile published in the Atlantic last year.
And yet, African Americans spent much of 2014 on bended knee pleading for justice, crying for jobs, begging for equal treatment, with President Obama declaring that a countrys conscience has to be sometimes triggered to bring awareness to the killings of unarmed black men and boys by police....

If low=end urban African-Americans actually were to receive equal treatment, perhaps half of them would be imprisoned instead of 25%. In the meantime, most people who have no trouble with their skin color are asking them nicely to just STFU for a while, learn English, pull up their pants, try to behave in a somewhat more civilized manner for a while, and get back to us.
No decent behavior, no peace.
“The power of blacks is that their block voting helps the Democrats in close elections.”
Definitely made the difference in ‘08 and ‘12 IMO, but in 2016 no Dem is going to get that vote back...Shrillary or Fauxahontas? Like voting for your high school principal! ;)
Yep. The illegals are now being courted by the Rats.
I’m watching a story about the KKK and cussing at the TV.
Bunchuh, deadneck, losers and bigotted racists.
They were bereft of material status and suffered themselves envy, making them morally be bereft, void and completely intellectually bankrupt.
Annnnnd, then I read this story and wait for that slap to head, indicating a horrible face palm has just been committed in writing...
“Blacks’ political muscle has done got soft”
“Al Sharpton ... Viagra”
Yes, it does sound like this somewhat-black writer with the preppy name Courtland is talking about Afro-penile flabbiness, doesn’t it?
I have to chew Blackjack saltpeter gum non-stop to get through the day, and frankly, I don’t want to hear this whining about impotence from our perpetually disgruntled class.
Right answer, wrong reason.
1. Truly, it is high time that blacks stop expecting the government (read: Democrat party) to save them and go about the business of saving themselves.
2. If each black undertook the responsibility for improving their own individual situation and quit tying their fortunes to the group, they would have a chance to get ahead.
3. They need to rid their heads of this idea that the white man hates them and is holding them down. So long as they blame their difficulties on others, they won't recognize them and can't address them.
4. Start with the recognition that being dependent is not a good way to go through life. Then recognize that there is one political party that encourages this dependence -- delivering free stuff in return for a vote. But that's ALL they deliver -- because they can't afford the dependence to become independence.
5. So far as the existence of racism is concerned, I see a helluva lot more Al Sharptons around than I do David Dukes.
How about, y'know, just being Americans?
Well, a nation must have an economic base that produces something. So, let's take that $1.1 trillion and strip out all contributing income from U.S. Federal Gov't employment. Then strip out all contributing income from State Gov't employment. Then strip out all local government employment (counties, cities, townships, public schools, etc.). Then strip out all contributing income from employment from a not for profit enterprise whose only clients are Federal, State and local government entities. Then strip out all contributions from EBT payments, WIC, Section-8, EITC and any other public money transfers. Now run that computation again.
There are fewer than 30 black-owned banks in the country, according to the Federal Reserve, compared with about 130 such institutions at the turn of the 20th century. Youd think black people would be seeking more community-oriented banks as alternatives to the big Wall Street firms that ripped them off during the Great Recession.
Black-owned businesses are the second largest employer of black people, next to the federal government. But only 7 percent of small businesses are owned by blacks.
Yet, there was a time when blacks had all of this. It was called the Jim Crow Era.
It was pre-civil rights and segregation was the order of the day. Yet, black families thrived, black businesses prospered and black communities bore no resemblance to the urban ghettos of today.
Now that's about all that's left since many are too paranoid of "being white" to join the rest of us. Let us return to the days of segregation and become a nation within nation. For some of us, that's where it all started.
When I was a kid growing up, Negroes were segregated and were living in a "community within a community" across the tracks in our little town. They had their own professions (doctors, lawyers, teachers, plumbers, auto mechanics, barbers, etc.) and attended their own schools, churches, owned and ran their own businesses, and handled their affairs fairly well without relying too much on the white community except for police and fire protection.
Many Negroes worked across town in white owned businesses for better wages and jobs, especially the factories and railroad shops who paid the best wages and benefits in town. Many worked as domestics in the more affluent white homes in the main town and took in laundry and ironing for extra money. Many shopped in the main part of the town at Woolworths, Sears, and other businesses. Not everyone was poor. Many were very well-to-do financially and had better homes than us and drove fine automobiles. Dad was white, but let me tell you, he and the Negro men of that period were some sharp-dressed dudes. Women weren't too bad either.
We lived across the same tracks on the other side of the Negro community on the edge of town. Two room shack, outhouse, no paved roads, and no car. We used to walk though the Negro community to get to the main part of town to pay our bills and do our shopping. Along the way we used to pass the time of day with many of our Negro friends. Sometimes we stopped at the Negro doctor or dentist to get checked. Sometimes dad would stop and pick up some "medicine" behind the drug store on the way back home. I never noticed any difference in the races except for the color of our skin. Character-wise there was no difference. I was only a kid, so I thought segregation was normal between the races. In 1954, I learned it was not.
By the sixties integration was the big thing. They had closed down the Negro schools and bussed everybody across town to the white schools. The Negro owned business started going broke, people were leaving town, and everyone was starting to feel uneasy about the races.
This was before the days of welfare. After fifty years of integration, I have mixed feelings. I wonder where the races would be today if integration and welfare had not been introduced. Would we have gradually integrated or remained segregated?
The truth is African-Americans, by actions of their own doing are now isolated from the general American society, standing alone with no other “major” minority group in the USA standing in their corner. Obama and his ilk of Black political greed mongers, have done nothing but to sink the average, African-American deeper into the prison of “economic & political” slavery!!!
The problem lies within the “Black” community itself with drugs, poor education, broken families,, excessive abortion, fatherless families, single parent houselholds or, no household at all!!! The Michael Browns, Trayvon Martin are just simply the “street” thugs that have surfaced in the African-American communities, enmasse.
The leadership of Black folks, starting with Obama on downward is non-existant, other then, for political and economic greed aimed at keeping the BLacks, down on the “Obama Plantation”!!!! Yet, as the author aptly points out, there are many American Blacks that do not live In “Escape From New York” environments and have had much success and total acceptance in American society, as successful, productive, happy citizens and families!!!
However....I fear the majority of American Black folk have trapped themselves in the evil hands of the Obama types....and as such, will go nowhere but down as time marches on. I passionately and hopefully wish that I am proved dead wrong....but I doubt it very much!!! Self-inflicted wounds is no way to go through life. Poor folks have been used and abused, by their own kind. Dumb, only begets dumber....sad to say!!!
Blackjack....
Aw man.
Haven’t had that crap in 30 years....
I'm familiar with the time you're describing. Indeed, I alluded to it upthread.
And I share your mixed feelings. Judicially forced integration was the sledge that shattered the modus vivendi between the races and forced us all to find a new balance.
From its outset, I believed that forced integration would, in the end, undo many of the benefits that should've come from ending segregation. Block-busting and bussing set in motion "white flight" and ensured black resentment.
I've forgotten exactly which judge it was, but one of the federal judges who ordered bussing repented on his death bed, calling it "the worst idea anybody ever had". <
And that's exactly what it was. The convenience, safety and community link of the neighborhood school...gone! Huge sums invested in rolling stock rather than teachers and equipment. The wide disparity between the races in performance giving forth to a teaching regime that was no longer focused on merit-based student performance, but aimed at leveling grades and otherwise blurring the difference. To be blunt, bussing destroyed public education.
Now, had segregation been removed from the equation without integration being judicially imposed, I believe we would've all found a new balance for ourselves, over time. Instead of a hostile takeover, we would've experienced a friendly merger. The professional black families would've moved across the tracks and been welcome among their peers in Bankers Heights. As a consequence, black children would've filtered from Douglass High over into Central High.
Eventually, we all would've found our place within this altered society. By 2014, we wouldn't still be dealing with this problem...
To all communist agitators who write newspaper columns: please get a life.
I wish them gods speed in creating their black Spain. There is plenty of land on their contentment in which to create their utopia. Imagine the 46th strongest economy not held back by racism, police brutality, artificially high prison rates, ... I would support their cause with financial backing both personally and would partition the federal government to support for 3 years maybe 5 with the only stipulation that there is a no return clause if separation / reparation funding is accepted.
There are 42 million African Americans in this country with a combined purchasing power expected to hit $1.1 trillion this year. And that's just for the drugs.
Thank you that was a great reply.
The harder the government tries to resolve the problem the worse it gets. The Negro race is more divided among themselves and from the rest of America than ever before.
They are going to have to put their effort into rebuilding their families, raising and educating children of good moral character, and recognizing the opportunities they have been afforded. No amount of legislation or welfare can do for them what they must do for themselves.
It is a mystery to me why they don’t seek to emulate the successful members of their communities. Most successful Negroes possess the same attributes of good character, education, and family as do other successful people regardless of their colour or race. Then why they continue to emulate the losers in their community and then complain about it doesn’t make sense. Whitey is not keeping them down, they are keeping themselves down. But the government re-enforces this belief by providing welfare assistance and legislation to continue the cycle of desperation.
When they decide to obey G_D’s laws concerning marriage and the family, and start educating and raising children of good moral character, they will break the cycle. Gold cannot buy them this. It is a gift from G_D who created mankind in his image. And to the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton, I would like to inform them of the fine line they are walking as they feed their flocks.
Obviously false!
Otherwise, we'd now be wondering who's going to succeed President McCain? Vice President Sarah or the Fake Injun from Massachusetts?
Fact is, Zero was elected because the Sheeple support affirmative action in the voting booth.
“Fact is, Zero was elected because the Sheeple support affirmative action in the voting booth.”
I don’t think so; Obama was elected because a large number of non-blacks want communism. Many have despaired of finding decent jobs in the “new normal” economy, and they want the government to be their mommy. Attitudes among young whites, as well as those employed in government jobs, would frighten you.
