They both seemed to appear in the same comics, so the association was a natural for me.
I’m not a fan of Amy Bin Goodman’s “Democracy NO(w)” but they have a 50 minute interview with Art Spigelman on this subject:

“Cartoonist Lives Matter”: Art Spiegelman Responds to Charlie Hebdo Attack, Power of Cartoons
Published on Jan 9, 2015
All of this outpouring of support.
Strange, I don’t recall all of the support around the world and in the town squares for the contractors who were murdered, lynched from a bridge, and set afire in Iraq.
“Artists lives matter.”
Everybody’s life matters.
I own a bunch of his books, from the book of Genesis to his portraits of old blues men. He's fascinating.
Any of you Crumb fans notice more than a passing similarity between Angelfood McSpade and a certain first lady?
Type at google: Robert Crumb
Then images. That guy is sick, very sick. The writer not any better.
Thank you for posting this... a phenomenally talented social commentator... hard to imagine nobody else thought to interview him.
Pretty nervous too! LOL!
I’ve made that connection a few times
Has any cartoonist had the brainwave to simply create a book that depicts muhammad saying what he said and doing what he did?
Like to see the stupid savages field that one.
He takes jealous shots at the magazine in the interview. Did you read it?
P.S.: I hate Crumb’s overly complicated, hirsute style. Give me the clean lines of Mad’s cartoonists any day - along with the looney Don Martin.
Of course, I’m talking about Mad’s hay day - the 60s. It’s fallen off quite a bit these days although it occasionally still makes me laugh.
Oh I don’t know Alex Ross and Neil Gaiman are pretty good.
Now Spiegelman - that’s an artist
“Spy vs Spy” classic stuff.
Loved Spy vs Spy. Their movie parodies were sublime. I have many of the issues in paperback and when I’m feeling down I read them again.
Remember MAD’s version of John Wayne’s “True Grit?”: “True Fat.” LOL.
No, I forgot that one! I remember their sendup of Streisand’s first three movies called “On a Clear Day You Can See a Funny Girl Singing ‘Hello, Dolly’ Forever.” They called her Bubbie Strident.
Gilbert Shelton did the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.
Already been corrected, see reply #41
My choices for greatest comic artist of all time went to Frank Frazetta and Jack Kirby. Had to go check it out. Kirby IS #1. Frazetta might actually have won that honor, but his career in comics was short lived as he went to painting.
