Did Harry Truman have a college degree?

W&M is a relative bargain for in-state but out-of-state not so much. Out-of-state tuition and fees (2014-15 school year) at W&M is $53,560 vs Harvard @ $58.607. Of course, hardly anyone pays the ‘sticker price.’ But how would anyone afford that, short of the Gateses?

Sen. Warren has picked up college debt as a battle cry should she choose to run vs. Hillary and she will have a built-in constituency with all these young people overburdened paying off those loans.

I would send a kid into the trades before any liberal arts college.

Abraham Lincoln never even attended college.

Sounds like a good example to me. He retained his common sense and wisdom - instead of getting indoctrinated and obligated.

I’m leery of ANYone who graduated Yale or HARVARD.

Gingrich is one of the most intelligent men to ever be in DC - AND he Didn’t graduate from an Ivy League, aka Socialist Indoctrination Institution. Ditto, Sarah Palin.

If there’s going to be a litmus test as to colleges, then we should NEVER look at anyone from the Ivy Leagues.

So, what do you all say?

Look at the shape our country is in and then tell me with a straight face that only degreed intellectuals can govern.

I knew someone was going to "go there" with my post once I hit enter.

Billy was fronted by Arkansas & national politicians who had plans for him. You've heard him, does he really sound like a Rhodes scholar to you? I was referring to Ted Cruz, son of an immigrant who had almost no one but himself to credit for his appearance at Princeton and Harvard.

The tutoring he received as a member of the upper class is roughly the equivalent to college.

I have a college degree and a law degree. Big freakin’ deal. I know plenty of businessmen, entrepreneurs, and others that I’d much rather see in high office than most of my colleagues.
In lots of ways a lack of college is a plus. Very few make it through without suffering long lasting impairment from the horrendous indoctrination that happens there.
Fortunately my parents adequately prepared me for it.
I don’t recommend it unless it is absolutely necessary to be in a particular profession where one is required.
Oh yea, and a double bonus here is that Walker was certainly not a member of Skull and Bones. He was too busy being an adult.

And Lincoln did not attend college, but he read for the law and became a lawyer, as was the practice at the time. It is like a GED version of a juris doctor.

You could still do that in many states fairly recently.

I believe you still can in California and many other states. But they put a lot of roadblocks in your way if you try it.

There’s an endless list of things I don’t like about BillyJeff, but he IS smart academically. LOTS smarter than the dork who’s there now, but not IMO on par w/Cruz. BillyJeff’s big downfall is his complete lack of self-discipline. And his politics.

(you couldn’t possibly have been referring to his southern accent as disqualifying him from ‘sound[ing] like a Rhodes Scholar,’ could you?)

I have met more brain dead, stupid, total lack of common sense people with a degree than I care to even think about.
Give me some body who knows how to read and has the ability to think critically.
A person who can SEARCH, SIFT and SOLVE.
A person who has faced real world problems in their life and found real workable solutions to those problems; without waiting for a hand out or bailout from mommy, daddy or the government.

I have three degrees and taught in various colleges for a number of years. It is my opinion that a college degree is not necessary to be able to make good decisions which is the primary skill of any effective administrator. I would vote for Walker, but we won’t get him as a choice. I think the GOPe will give us Hillary in a suit, Jeb Mitt Krispy Kream etc.

Ultimately, a college degree is nothing more than a receipt. My wife didn’t go to college, but spent decades working her way up from receptionist at a law firm to become Director of Administration at a major international law firm. Her raw intlligence, experience, intuition and people skills allowed her to make the office she was in the envy of the firm. Then a hostile change in managing partner kicked her to the curb, and despite numerous glowing references and an amazing record of accomplishment, her job prospects are now severely limited because so many employers want that receipt and won’t look at her for the extraordinary individual that she is.
