Time Warner Cable News ^ | January 1, 2015

NY1 has learned that former Governor Mario Cuomo has died at the age of 82.

This comes just hours after Andrew Cuomo was publicly inaugurated for his second term as the 56th governor of New York.

Governor Cuomo said in his speech at One World Trade Center that his father was unable to attend because he was too ill. He also said he and his family had spent New Year's eve with the senior Cuomo.

Governor Cuomo had also changed his initial plans for his swearing in ceremony to take place in Manhattan as opposed to Albany.

Love him or hate him, Mario Cuomo was a HUGE figure in politics during the 1970's to 1990's. In fact, there was a lot of talk that Cuomo should have run for the Democratic Party nomination for President in 1988, but he declined to run given the innumerable issues of a Presidential race.

Mario Cuomo is arguably the most high-profile politician of Italian-American descent besides Rudy Giuliani and Fiorello LaGuardia.

that he was given a spirit of true repentance at the end.

With God all things are possible.

More of a local story than national.

Seriously? No, I don’t mourn the death of those who worked for the forces of darkness. The world is a better place.

I do not rejoice in his death, but he did work for the forces of darkness, so I won't mourn him either.

Bob Grant can now torment Mario for all eternity.

Exactly my thought when reading the title.

Mario’s attitude toward the electorate was nicely summarized by his comment after the 94 midterm Republican landslide which he characterized as “the sheep leading the shepherds”.

Do you remember the first caller to Mario’s radio show? Guy went on about how excited he was that Mario had his own show, blah, blah, blah... and continued to say “because that means you’re not governor any more!” Not the greatest start to a new career, but totally hilarious.

RIP, Mario.

I can’t remember that specifically, but my general memory is that his short lived show was funny because of frequent zingers like that, he was no match for an audience of savvy callers.

I never understood why he didn’t run for President in 1988. I believe he would have won and had it for 8 years and delayed Clinton by four years. Mario Coumo was a great orator in the league of Slick Willie.

Naw. I must be gettin' old, because at some point you start to miss the guys you used to yell at. My turn's coming too soon to worry about it.

De mortuis nil nisi bonum, with very, very few exceptions. One was Teddy Kennedy, another Huey Chavez. About the sitting President the less said the better. There are people in private life in that category as well: Jane Fonda, William Ayers, and some others. Not Mario. He's dead, he's past it, he's in Somebody's hands now from Whose judgment we all may tremble. I'll let it go at that.

Great orator equates to a used car dealer who is selling you a hunk of junk at top dollar. The pious arrogance of this man can be seen in his son andy. He sh##s ice cream

If Mario had run and been elected in ‘88, and reelected in ‘92, it would have been another 4-8 years after Cuomo before Clinton (might) have been elected. It’s really RARE to have the same party in office for 3 consecutive terms. Bush “41” was the exception and that had to do with Reagan’s success in office. Before that it was @ 120 years. Van Buren as I recall.
