Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan on Monday declared the "defeat" of the U.S. and its allies in the 13-year-old war, a day after the coalition officially marked the end of its combat mission.
And, as Heath Druzin of Stars and Stripes reports, some U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan in what their commander describes as:
... a non-combat mission in a combat environment.

I guess we just quit and went home.
There is nothing there that is in US Essential interests and we haven't had an interest there since US Special Forces deposed the Taliban Government and Mullah Omar.
Circa June, 2002.
When I think of the hundreds who died there, and thousands who were maimed, I weep.
It’s how they view wars. The only way to win is to carpet bomb or nuke the region, and destroy their evil.
I pretty much agree with what you said there.
There will be no fundamental change. Too much influence of the “other” in that country. Especially with Pakistan right next door.
God bless you. You are an optimist.
Anyone with a passing knowledge of the history of Afghanistan knows it gobbles up invaders and spits them out. Typically, the country is invaded fairly easily, and then as time passes, it is a death of a thousand cuts. See the four British Afghan wars of the 19th century, the Soviet attempt of the 20th and ours in the 21st. They are happy in their 7th century sh!thole and refuse to change for anyone.
Obama and his commie ‘RATs were defeated. A Congess full of Muzzie loving buffoons was defeated. AMERICA WAS NOT DEFEATED.
Everyone forgets the opium money flowing into politicians pockets. Troops will remain to protect the supply routes. Our poor guys.
thank you.
Oh, come on, a little historical perspective: no one who conquered Afghanistan ever had a successor who held the place. GWB is just the latest in a long line going back to Alexander the Great to have the control he won of that wretched patch of perpetual clan-warfare frittered away by is successor.
It is one of the great judo-moves in history. Seven years after the attack on the World Trade Center, the Muslim Brotherhood occupied the White House.
Afghan Pride is astonishing, for what it’s worth...
The only way to understand our involvement in Afghanistan is in terms of China containment, but you will NEVER hear anyone in DC admit that. And in that sense, the long foray there has been a pretty clear success at an acceptable, though tragic, cost. Those GIs who died and suffered there did not serve in vain. China has been precluded from garrisoning that country and linking overland supply routes to Iran and Pakistan, and has been limited to low-level harassment through its proxies rather than direct military action.
Keeping a force there to bolster a pro-US government further continues the containment while giving Washington the public perception that the war is over. It ain’t, and won’t be for a long time. The Chinese know this, and can take cold comfort in the latest news.
No, the Taliban is just applying the standard Muslim definition of victory:
“You didn’t kill all of us, so we won!”
