Florida Becomes 3rd Largest State Following California and Texas, New York Drops to 4th;

The US census bureau reports Florida Passes New York to Become the Nation’s Third Most Populous State

I added the dashed red line to show the stagnation in Illinois.

The Bureau Reports ....

By adding an average of 803 new residents each day between July 1, 2013 and July 1, 2014, Florida passed New York to become the nation’s third most populous state, according to U.S. Census Bureau state population estimates released today. Florida’s population grew by 293,000 over this period, reaching 19.9 million. The population of New York increased by 51,000 to 19.7 million.

California remained the nation’s most populous state in 2014, with 38.8 million residents, followed by Texas, at 27.0 million. Although the list of the 10 most populous states overall was unchanged, two other states did change positions, as North Carolina moved past Michigan to take the ninth spot.

Another milestone took place in Georgia (ranked 8th), which saw its population surpass 10 million for the first time.

North Dakota was the nation’s fastest-growing state over the last year. Its population increased 2.2 percent, followed by the 1.7 percent growth in Nevada and Texas. Each of the 10 fastest-growing states was in the South or West with the exception of North Dakota.

Six states lost population between July 1, 2013, and July 1, 2014: Illinois (9,972 or -0.08 percent), West Virginia (3,269 or -0.18 percent), Connecticut (2,664 or -0.07 percent), New Mexico (1,323 or -0.06 percent, Alaska (527 or -0.07 percent) and Vermont (293 or -0.05 percent).
Most Populous States

Political Implications

States like Illinois and New York continue to lose population to warmer places like Texas and Florida. Heck, Illinois tax policy is so bad, it has lost population to Indiana and Wisconsin.

Florida not only has more sunshine than Illinois, it also has no state income tax and lower taxes in general, a nice advantage for retirees.

Illinois could easily drop to 6th or even 8th, and probably will do so over the course of the next few years.

These trends have some interesting political implications given the US's electoral college voting system of winner-take-all, state-by-state.

Florida is Cuban and Mexican.

Not hardly...

South Florida has a large population of Cubans and NE retirees...

Redneck far outnumber any one group...

I did a search for Montana because I knew it is not well populated and compared it with Florida.

Here is what I found

The 2013 population estimate of Montana is 1,015,165
The total area of Montana is 147,046 sq mi

the 2013 population estimate of Florida= 19,552,860
The total area of Florida is 58,664 sq mi
The population of Florida is 18,537,695 more than the population of Montana, while area wide Montana is almost three times as large as Florida (88,382 sq miles to be exact

I always thought Montana should be a very conservative state, I have no idea why they keep electing D governors and Senators.

I have no idea what they have at the moment though

From the orginal story: “Illinois could easily drop to 6th or even 8th, and probably will do so over the course of the next few years.”

I have to disagree with that assessment. The two state behind them are Pennsylvania and Ohio. While Illinois did lose population, Pennsylvania only gained 5,000 people and Ohio is 1.3 million behind in size.

The problem is, all these Damn Yankees are moving to Flori-Duh, and bringing the politics that ruined their home states with them.

Cf. South Flori-Duh and all the LIEberal Democrats that get elected down there, and also cf. how tight the battles are between us good conservative Southren Ladies and Gentlemen and them Damn Yankee LIEberals!

Flori-Duh should not be a Blue state, but it certainly is competitive when it should be a slam-dunk Red State!

Don’t get me wrong — we welcome all y’all — just leave your LIEberal politics up Nawth!

Florida did not become any larger and New Yorker did not become any smaller. These headline writers should make it clear they are talking about population.

If you need that spelled out to you, you're pretty slow.

Michigan and North Carolina also changed size rank and North Dakota and Alaska changed size rank. They were the only other states to do so beside NY and Florida.

It just hit me that New York is now the 4th largest state. That is big in my mind as I grew up with it being # 2.

Looking toward 2015 rankings, Mass and Arizona, Alabama and South Carolina, Maine and New Hampshire could all change size rank. Montana and Rhode Island will likely do it before the end of the decade.

Florida is half Northeast Socialist and a quarter Cuban/Mexican.

You forgot the Puerto Ricans who are moving down from New York. It is called a double bounce!

"Where all the white peoples at?"

Apparently not in their bedrooms making babies. Seriously, white voters will in a few years represent only a plurality of the electorate, thus no longer able to win national elections without some coalition of minority voters. The situation may actually be closer in time because of the Electoral College that favors the large states with large minority populations.

It seems that your point has been lost a couple of the folks here.

But I agree, there is something to be said to holding a purported professional to a standard that would warrant the afforded standing.

I think professional “journalists” to be clear, concise and accurate.

When they call a girl a “he”, as is often in stories about so-called “transexuals”, they fail.

My husband wanted to move to Florida after he retired from the service in 79. I didn’t want to have anything to do with it. I lived in 71 Florida while he was on his second tour in Vietnam. I hated it. I did like the people, but not the state

Florida also has a huge uptick in illegal immigrants aka ‘documented workers’ from across the border...and Cubans are still coming on boats too.

Retirees come weekly, just wonder how long they can entertain such numbers...it is a hot place, and not for me.
