People have been slaughtering each other over what that meaning might be ever since it happened.
My theory is it's based on love. Unfortunately, my theory makes a lot of devout people very angry, because it minimizes the crucial role of the threat of eternal hell, amongst other things.
If only Jesus would have just taken the time to prioritize His teachings, to help us sort them out. All He would have had to do is say something like, "this is my greatest commandment," and then we would know what comes first in trying to understand Him.
Alas, He left us without making things that easy.
Well yes it is, God’s own love.
We can’t create new love any more than we can create matter or energy.
And I don’t get hung up over hell while warning people about it... hell is a fate we humans craft for ourselves in the face of God’s love resolutely refused. Hell’s occupants and God despise each other.
A Savior is needed to obviate a fate of hell. Jesus was that Savior. Christmas deserves to be merry. It’s the opposite of the grim hole we were digging for ourselves.
Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' 38"This is the great and foremost commandment.
