Sorry, Putin. Russia’s economy is doomed
Washington Post ^ | 15 Dec 14 | Matt O'Brien

A funny thing happened on the way to Vladimir Putin running strategic laps around the West. Russia's economy imploded.

The latest news is that Russia's central bank raised interest rates from 10.5 to 17 percent at an emergency 1 a.m. meeting in an attempt to stop the ruble, which is down 50 percent on the year against the dollar, from falling any further. It's a desperate move to save Russia's currency that comes at the cost of sacrificing Russia's economy. So even if it "works," things are about to get a lot worse.

It's a classic kind of emerging markets crisis. It's only a small simplification, you see, to say that Russia doesn't so much have an economy as it has an oil exporting business that subsidizes everything else. That's why the combination of more supply from the United States, and less demand from Europe, China, and Japan has hit them particularly hard. Cheaper oil means Russian companies have fewer dollars to turn into rubles, which is just another way of saying that there's less demand for rubles—so its price is falling. It hasn't helped, of course, that sanctions over Russia's incursion into Ukraine have already left Russia short on dollars.

My God you are a groveling weakling.

I haven’t seen anyone as pathetically pro-Russia as you since the 1980s and the Russian led peace movement that was trying to block Reagan.

It’s too bad you missed your chance to defect.

Please don’t share your thoughts with our American troops as they are having to move into Poland to counter the Russian threat and protect freedom, just send your Hillary Clinton “empathize” love notes to the Russian intelligence trolls who have been sent out deliver their state propaganda on Western forums, and influence naive people like you.

Depending entirely on oil exports to survive is incredibly stupid.

It’s a bit like a woman who depends entirely on her beauty to survive.... someday the beauty will fade and then where are you?

A single scientific breakthrough in energy technology could wipe out the value of oil worldwide in short order...everyone would try to pump and sell all they had as fast as they possibly could. Just imagine where that would leave the oil exporting countries!

This oil price slump is very dangerous....Russia is led by a very smart and very strange guy and war could easily be the result of all this.

I guess you want to ignore that the last president Ukraine had was a Putin puppet. When he got out of line, Putin made him change course. Then, the people removed him. And how do you explain Russian threats and other malicious activities like to Finland, Sweden, and the Baltic states? Self defense?

Now that there is a horrifying photo! Anyone that would stand there posing for such a picture, with a smile on his face, is a sociopath.

Oh so I am not to throw out rude cheap shots but you can? Nice.

So unless we are willing to go to war with everyone around the world we disagree with we are groveling weaklings? We are a sovereign country. We are not world police. We used to know that.

Defect? People on this thread need to burn their old spy movies. I neither love nor hate Russia. But posters on this thread are to Russia as Muslims are to Jews. It requires no real argument to hate them. They are permanently bad.

Even if I thought the conflict was entirely Russia’s fault I still would not see it as our place to intervene. If we spread ourselves all around the world we cannot be strong enough to fight the battles we MUST win. Take ISIS out of the land of the living. Don’t be so cozy with China. Lots of issues I would place ahead of Russia.

Where is the money going to come from? We already have a debt we cannot pay off and battles we have to fight and a military that has been cut way way back.

Remember back when we let the world be at war and did nothing until we were bombed by Japan? Well that was too slow to react. But these days people are way too quick to react.

I am finished with this hateful thread.

Its hardly doomed but will take an oil price hit

Oil will go back up again

Traditional developing nations producers are just squeezing US frackers to see if they can slow them down

Or so this lady says....and I believe anything rolls off her lush gorgeous lips

~Go read how your country treated its Soviet satellites, comrade. Rape is how it began and violence was what kept them under Russia’s dominance.~

I am not Soviet, ‘comrade’. Said country doesn’t even exist anymore. There is no basis to re-establish it at all, so all your fear-mongering it simply pointless.

Thanks. I agree and $90 is the budgetary necessity for the Kingdom. I just don’t know exactly how long they can maintain the current or lower barrel price levels. I don’t think this is going to last. I see the target of this pricing to be Iran and Russia. The US is just icing on the cake, but a minor disruption and pull back.

That is exactly what I was gaming. Russian proxies surround the kingdom.

Oh, you think Putin is not trying to reestablish dominance of his neighbors? You think he's not threatening peaceful countries? Rename your country Putinstan since it's clearly becoming a Third World country with a President for Life.

Perhaps you can tell us what the Sov...er, Russians mean by the term "near abroad?" What's the lastest from the Kremlin?

The only thing hateful is the policies Putin pursues. If you show up to tell everyone not to have schadenfreude as his policies implode the economy and his paranoid Russian chauvinism is exposed for the cheap scape goating that it always is, you’re going to get some reminders that you’re misreading our delight. If it comes that there is a war, it will be because of Putin, not because we choose to self censor or turn a blind eye to his cruel and reckless adventurism that’s caused all of this grief.

Investors also hurried to sell off Russian stocks with the Micex index down 3.5 per cent at 1,832.09. Brent oil also contrinued its path downwards on Tuesday with a 1.9 per cent decline to $59.88 a barrel.

Ever heard about Monroe Doctrine? Near abroad is somehow similar concept, though it doesn’t cover as much territory.

The Monroe doctrine refers to other countries establishing colonies in Latin America. Where are the colonies in Central and Eastern Europe?

Yes, and the Monroe Doctine was to keep colonizing powers in and the near abroad doctrine means Russia can colonize its neighbors. Kind of different concepts, no?
