Ted Cruz Will Bank on the Base
National Review Online ^ | December 15, 2014 | Eliana Johnson

To hell with the independents. That’s not usually the animating principle of a presidential campaign, but for Ted Cruz’s, it just might be.

His strategists aren’t planning to make a big play for so-called independent voters in the general election if Cruz wins the Republican nomination. According to several of the senator’s top advisers, Cruz sees a path to victory that relies instead on increasing conservative turnout; attracting votes from groups — including Jews, Hispanics, and Millennials — that have tended to favor Democrats; and, in the words of one Cruz strategist, “not getting killed with independents.”

Twenty-three months from the presidential election, it seems all but a given that the freshman senator, who has been in Congress just two years, will mount a bid for the White House. “He’s looking at the race very seriously,” says a senior adviser, who confirms that Cruz’s campaign headquarters would be based in Houston. Cruz strategists see a way to win both the nomination and the general election. They are assiduously cultivating the party’s top-dollar donors, almost all of whom remain uncommitted. Internally, the senator has shaken up his staff to address problems and to set the stage for a presidential bid. All that’s left, it seems, is an official announcement.

It’s almost conventional wisdom now that presidential candidates woo the party faithful in primary contests and tack to the middle in the general election to attract more-moderate voters. Not Cruz......

When the chips are down, in the booth...... to be relevant, an independent must decide for either the Republican or the Democrat candidate presidential candidate. Any other course means the independent voter declares himself and his vote irrelevant.

PROOF that you are DEAD WRONG is the fact that Romney lost. My and millions of other otherwise-straight-Republican voters' third-party or non-votes were VERY RELEVANT. Romney LOST because of them, and because our third-party and our declined votes WERE so very relevant, the Republican party was prevented from moving even farther left. YOUR vote for Romney, bert, may have been intended to be "against" Obama, but in function and reality, your vote for Romney was solely a vote TO turn the Republican party left. OWN IT, please.

The United States of America has a very stringent policy on who we allow to obtain a Top Secret{Cosmic} Clearance and that being said makes me wonder if this Senator from Texas could cut the muster

Do you think that he couldn't get the proper clearance to be President, and see everything?

Independent isn’t a political position, it just means that one doesn’t belong to a party.

Anyone who doesn’t want to join a party is an Independent, it doesn’t tell you anything about that individual’s politics.

you were irrelevant and responsible for the tyrant that is Obama

you can rationalize till hell freezes over but you remain trivial irrelevancy for not having the intellect nor courage to choose between the two legitimate candidates

In the eyes of certain conservatives, Reagan was a RINO: he raised taxes, cut and ran from lebanon, and gave amnesty to illegals. In their eyes, HE’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

In the eyes of certain conservatives, Jesus Christ was a RINO: He consorted with prostitutes and tax collectors, and urged people to pay their taxes to an oppressive government. In their eyes, HE’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Which begs the question: why did we end up with Bishop Willard as the 2012 GOPe nominee? Because in the case of every conservative candidate, the cry rang out “HE’S JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH”.

In the words of Chuck Schumer: “We’re United. You’re Not.”

The important thing is that Reagan himself admitted to those MISTAKES. We must learn from them not REPEAT them. Anyone trying to govern like REAGAN WOULD/SHOULD LEARN THAT LESSON as Mr. Cruz seems to have done. Apparently you didn't get the memo.

Recall the FReeper definition of “Conservative”:

“I’m not sure, but it sure as hell ain’t YOU!!”

That’s the only memo I need.
