Man Dies During Traffic Stop From Asthma Attack as Cop Refuses to Let them Drive to Hospital
The Free Thought Project ^ | December 13, 2014 | Matt Agorist

Chippewa Falls, WI — Dashcam video has been released that shows the disturbing last moments of a man’s life as he’s detained by a Chippewa Falls police officer on the way to the hospital.

29-year-old Casey Kressin died after suffering a severe asthma attack when the vehicle that was rushing him to the hospital was pulled over by a Chippewa Falls police officer.

After they were stopped, Kressin’s girlfriend immediately starts to beg the officer to take him to the hospital. The officer instead calls for an ambulance.

The couple was just 3 miles from the hospital when they were stopped. It took over 6 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.

During the stop, the officer callously listens to the begging couple’s pleas for help as Kressin slips further away. “He’s going to die! He can’t breathe!” screams Kressin’s girlfriend. We can hear Kressin begging for help as he falls to the ground, starving for air, “I can’t breathe…..I can’t breathe.”

The officer just stares at the couple, telling them to wait for the ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrives, it takes another 2 and 1/2 minutes before Kressin begins his journey to the hospital; sadly too much time had passed. Police say Kressin became unresponsive at that time and was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph’s Hospital.

Chippewa Falls Chief Wendy Stelter says she stands behind the officers who responded, saying that Kressin’s girlfriend should not have been allowed to drive the rest of the way because she was hysterical.

However, she was only hysterical because her boyfriend was dying and being kept from life saving treatment that could have saved his life.

What better hands could there possibly be?

They’re getting sued, and rightly so.

...

Do you have a source for that?

“If that had been my husband with an asthma attack and me behind the wheel, there would have been no stopping, and definitely no begging. I’d have kept going, cop be damned.”

They probably thought he would help them. They were wrong.

Looks like a nice lawsuit.

I realize that people lie about things trying to trick policemen. But the answer is for the police yo take them to the hospital and if they are lying, just ticket them for obstructing a police officer.

“Did no one writing for that show not realize just how dumb that was?”

Webb was totally anti-gun and reflected it along with the other writers of the shows he produced. It was just a tad more subdued back then.

“the first mistake that was made was driving him at all. you call 911 and go by ambulance.”

Unless it started happening in the car.

Does that mean that if he had laid him down in the police car and driven him to the hospital, he still would have died?

Yes, it does. You cannot safely lay prone in these circumstances.

Without pressurized oxygen supply or effective medications, Casey's only chance to survive an end-stage attack was to remain seated in an upright position and maintain controlled breathing. Pressing down on an armrest with elbows, or pulling up on strap-hanger by the car window would have helped. Very small margins count.

Laying down forfeits a mechanical advantage needed to compress the lungs to exhale, and results in loss of consciousness. Death follows very quickly.

The hospital is 3 miles away, it took the ambulance 6 minutes to get to the couple. It took 2 - 2.5 minutes to get the man into the ambulance. I didn't watch the video, but I'm guessing it took the cop awhile to assess the situation (they always seem to take awhile even getting to my car to talk to me - checking out my plates I suppose, calling it in, etc.) Then talking with the woman about her speeding, perhaps believing they are conning him with an excuse, then finally realizing it is a medical problem. Then another few moments to figure out to call an ambulance. Say that all took 1.5 to 2 minutes. Now you are looking at 10 to 10.5 minutes.

3 miles away, speeding in a small-town would get you there within 4 to 5 minutes or so if she hadn't stopped. Still would have taken some time at the ER to get a doctor to the door, etc. - but he might have had a chance. I'm guessing the ER in Chippewa Falls isn't so big and not a huge bureaucracy to enter it.

The “good stuff” for asthma attacks is tincture of Lobelia; always has been, always will be.

Relief is instantaneous, and long lasting.

If you are having a kidney stone attack then you call an ambulance. If the person is having severe breathing trouble, you drive as fast as you can and still maintain some safety margin to the hospital with hopefully someone else to notify them that you have an extremely critical patient coming in.

Yes, generally agreed, although that is not really what happened here. They get out of the car immediately (not what I would do, at least not the BF who died). Police takes just a bit to head out to them.

Bottom line is waiting for ambulances is just like waiting for the cops - time is precious, and sometimes it just is not worth the wait, no matter how “professional” they are.

Stay and fight the good fight, Moonman.

The cop bashing faction that has infected FR has about driven me away.

Dollars to doughnuts the police department gats a kickback from the ambulance company.
