If you are having a kidney stone attack then you call an ambulance. If the person is having severe breathing trouble, you drive as fast as you can and still maintain some safety margin to the hospital with hopefully someone else to notify them that you have an extremely critical patient coming in.

Another article that I linked to said that the guy lived 10 miles away and that the average response time by EMS is 6 minutes.
