Defying his party's leadership, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz upended plans for smooth passage of a $1.1-trillion spending bill, forcing a rare Saturday session as Congress braces to prevent a new threatened government shutdown..
Cruz launched the Senate into turmoil as he tried to use the government shutdown as leverage to stop President Obama's immigration plans.
Now, Congress faces a midnight Saturday deadline to keep federal operations running.
Senators were streaming into the Capitol on a sunny winter Saturday for a series of procedural votes, with many not happy about the situation.
"I remind everyone, 12 o'clock midnight, 12 a.m., the United States government tonight runs out of money," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said as he opened the chamber.
The Senate chaplain used the morning prayer to ask for God's help empowering senators "to make their decisions after weighing them on the scale of long-term consequences."(continued)
The sudden turn of events hit Congress as lawmakers had largely agreed to move forward with funding the government and begin wrapping up their work before the holidays.

I posted last night that the mainstream media would blame Republicans for trying to shut down the government, when it is actually Democrats.
This headline proves me correct.
E. Warren is also against this bill, but the LA Times ignores that. That says a lot about the LA Times and their truthiness.
Also, Warren could have done what Cruz is doing (if she is really against the bill), but she did not. I wonder if Cruz has pointed this out yet.
I would mail him a check today and every month between now and Nov 2016. I would gladly support him as much as possible.
True. But watch how it's played in the media.
Time for grassroots to get behind a push for CRUZ to run!
The federal goverment ran out of money long ago. What they run out of at midnight is lipstick for the pig.
Brilliant!!
W-O-W. Cool pic!
and FYI, McConnell already left for KY when Cruz started all this. Unless turtle turns around to DC, Ted is running the Table!
And clueless Mitch expresses surprise that Cruz (or any member of the Congress) would make waves in an effort to do what the people want done...
Interesting is ‘last night’ Kiev’s ‘Rada’ was celebrating ‘the passage’ of this bill...twitter also had many posters posting it passed.....they see it as a done deal.
The Senate bill ...They’ve dubbed “the Ukraine Freedom Support Act” because of the delivery of $350 million worth of US military hardware to Ukraine.....Kiev lawmakers have hailed the bill as a “historic decision”.
Keep in mind this information was “last night” throughout the social and news agencies outside the US.
Here’s just one I pulled
———————Ian Bateson @ianbateson · Dec 12
“Praise in Ukraine’s Rada today for passage of S.2828 in US Senate that would provide #Ukraine w/lethal + non-lethal aid, expand #Russia sanctions”
And what are we going to do with this information? I’m not haranguing you, you understand. I just have discovered a new level of disgust with/for the impuissance of House Republicans.
I hope this isnt the shape of things to come -—
In November voters stood up to give republicans control of congress in order to end Obama’s destructive agenda.
The House controls the budget and will have a clear republican majority in the Senate to support them in January.
They will could be influential for the next two years...BUT,
John Boehner just gave one of those years away by forcing the Obama budget through the House so Reid can approve it on the way to vacation.
I also hope a conservative challenger will emerge and find support for speaker come January.
God Bless TED CRUZ!
However the Senate has the ability to pass a life-preserver
from the House before that
which will fund the government until Wednesday.
Go Ted!
John Boehner actually gave away the next 2 years. Nothing will get done in 2016, an election year.
A mild correction. They get six figure salaries and associated perks. They don't earn it.
I’m all for Kiev. My brothers wife is from there. That doesn’t help our situation one iota, though.
” John Boehner is a traitor. We must out think him. Not hard : )
what was his “point of order” in reference to? the article didn’t give any details as to how exactly he had forced a saturday session..
