Senate Hopes For Quick Wrap-Up Dashed {Omnibus could be rejected by liberals?)

Senate Republicans huddled over lunch Friday afternoon in the Capitol to discuss strategy on the House-passed spending bill and other pending legislation, exiting the meeting with a resounding message: Let's get this done and get the heck out of here.

But that feeling of optimism was quickly squashed.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had been negotiating with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Friday afternoon to bring up a vote on the omnibus bill later in the evening, keeping the government's doors open and allowing senators to take the weekend off. Many members on both sides of the aisle were hopeful that that agreement would include all of the Senate's remaining business, allowing members to head home for the rest of the year this weekend. But Reid warned members that they would have to return to the chamber Monday morning.

Members had worried that one of the omnibus' strongest opponents, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren on the left or Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on the right, would force them to stay in Washington through next week, using a series of procedural measures to delay the omnibus bill.

But on Friday, it was Reid who delayed Christmas.

There was an article earlier about how Grassley is making them jump through all the hoops on ramming through Obama’s last batch of appointees, which also means they have to come back on Monday.

Lame duck legislating is an insult to the citizens of this country.
