Support for gun rights at highest point in two decades

Gun-rights supporters are now a majority among Americans, according to a Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday that marks a stunning turnaround from two years ago, when the Newtown school shooting had appeared to give gun control advocates the upper hand in the public debate.

It’s the highest approval rate in two decades, Pew said, and it’s driven by changing attitudes across nearly all demographic lines, including among black Americans who are increasingly likely to view guns as good for protection, rather than as a public safety danger.

According to Pew, 52 percent of the public says it’s more important to protect Second Amendment rights, while 46 percent say gun control takes precedence over rights. That’s a flip from after the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, when just 45 percent supported gun rights and a majority said...

The good news is that not only is support for gun rights high, but court cases and laws have changed substantially in the favor or gun owners over the past 20 years too. We probably have better gun rights now than we have had in many decades, and there does not seem to be a backlash despite the media’s attempts to turn every shooting into an argument for gun control.

I don’t think that the Newtown massacre gave gun opponents the upper hand; in fact, it exposed the logically-inconsistent and emotionally-driven positions taken by anti-gunners. Americans, thankfully, didn’t take the bait, and I believe that we have actually grown stronger as a consequence of what happened that day and afterward.

The Dem/libs have been engaging in a steady push to infringe on our right
to keep and bear arms for decades. And this is how it has been working out
for them in the last two decades...

• The percentage of Americans who own guns has increased.
• The percentage of Americans who believe we have a right to own guns has increased.
• The number of guns owned per gun owner has increased.
• The amount of ammunition possessed per gun owner has increased.
• Concealed carry laws have spread from state to state like wildfire.
• Castle Doctrine laws have been passed in numerous states.
• Stand Your Ground laws have been passed in many states.
• Gun rights lobbying groups have become a cottage industry unto themselves sprouting up like mushrooms after a rainstorm.
• In the worst economy since the Great Depression the firearms industry can't keep up with orders or expand fast enough.
• 65.4 Million Guns Bought Since Obama Took Office, 91% More Than Bush's First-Term Total
• 46,455 Background Checks For Gun Purchases Each Day Under Obama

And in the last two months... (Nov. 2012 and Dec. 2012)

• Americans Buy Enough Guns in Last Two Months to Outfit the Entire Chinese and Indian Armies
• NRA membership has increased by 250,000. (Jan. 2013)
