LA Landslide: Republican Bill Cassidy Gains Ninth GOP Senate Seat in Win Over Landrieu
Townhall.com ^ | December 6, 2014 | Cortney O'Brien

Posted on 12/06/2014 6:42:38 PM PST by Kaslin

The 18-year long reign of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has finally come to an end in Louisiana. In a landslide victory in Saturday’s runoff election, Republican Bill Cassidy defeated the incumbent and captured the ninth Senate seat for the GOP, capping off a victorious midterm election for his party.

The road was rocky for Landrieu from the start. The public found out about her improper use of taxpayer funds, then the fact she doesn’t even own a home in Louisiana. Then, she dissed her constituents. Because of all her missteps and Cassidy’s growing lead, Democrats quickly gave up on Landrieu after the general election on November 4. Now, it’s clear Louisianans have given up on her as well.

And with that, this very long midterm election is over.

58? When? (The over under for Nate Silver for the Senate was 51 seats in 2014. That being the case, then 54 seats after this election was over performing, much to my surprise.)

58% to 42% in favor of Cassidy.

Nate predicted the Cassidy-Landrieu vote would be 58-42 (rounded from 57.8-42.2).

Here's the thread:

Senate Forecast: Landrieu Headed Toward Historic Defeat In Louisiana Runoff (Nate Silver)

As you note, Nate didn't do too well with his overall Senate prediction in November. He wrote an interesting post-election analysis where he said there was something out there that he and the other pollsters were missing in off-year elections in general, and that he was going to to focus on finding out what it was.

Thanks for the mention. I don’t suppose it’s all that strange to have elected representation that reflects the majority of a certain district.

I believe this complete role reversal in the South helps cause some folks to think Republicans were the big racists from posterity.

They don’t realize the (for the most part) changes in societal views on racism to have followed the change in political leanings as well.

As far as immigration reform is concerned, conservatives should be advocating “Open Borders-—No Benefits.”

I guarantee you we can get half of what you're proposing. No prizes for guessing which half.

The final tally of 56-44 suggests that (1) Landrieu landed some punches on Cassidy and (2) the Dem turnout machine was in overdrive.

NYRepublican72 had an interesting analysis showing that the Cassidy-Landrieu vote split last night was very close to the conservative-liberal vote split in the Nov. 4 primary.

See posts 573 and 578 in this linked thread.

I do remember his article. He said the polls were terrible for oddsmaking, which they were.

That’s a good question. I’ll answer for myself. Conservative politics is bleak, miserable, and reminiscent of the relationship between a battering spouse and a battered wife. So why do I continue? Because so much outside the realm of politics is truly wonderful and life enhancing and in some cases is rendering electoral politics irrelevant.

That and I have an unfortunate affinity for gallows humor.

Thanks Kaslin; I did finally see a program where they showed the final totals for the election.

He had a great interview on Fox News Sunday.

Nothing will change. Nothing. If the GOP had the White House, 70 senators and 300 representatives, nothing would change. I’ve seen this movie before and I know the ending. Nothing will change.

Yes, indeed, nothing will change - and nothing was any different. Take for example Obamacare. Had the Democrats not controlled Congress or the White House, it still would have passed just the same with the GOP in charge. Same with things like the stimulus, etc. Democrats would have passed the Bush tax cuts and signed them into law. A Dem controlled Congress would have passed welfare reform just like the GOP did. The judges appointed by Obama were no less conservative than those appointed by Bush. The supermajorities the Democrats had in Congress were likely going to move forward with things like nationalizing the oil fields as a follow-up to their nationalization of the healthcare system - and now that the GOP is in control those same kinds of policies will just keep right on sailing through as if nothing has changed, etc, etc, etc, etc....

Even though there is little blue on the map, they have formed a seemingly permanent lock on the electoral college.
