Not a chokehold: Truth of the Garner arrest
NY Post ^ | 8/14/2014 | Bo Dietl

It wasn’t a chokehold.

That’s just the biggest single distortion in all the talk about the Eric Garner case, in which the public has been misinformed and misled from the start.

The Rev. Al Sharpton has never had to put himself in harm’s way to protect our streets against crime, as our police officers do every day. He’s in no way qualified to stand on his soapbox and dictate procedures. I spent decades in law enforcement. During my time with the NYPD, I was responsible for over 1,400 felony arrests — any of which could’ve required the use of deadly physical force. Volunteering to be a decoy cop in the 1970s, I was the victim of more than 500 muggings, about 30 of which injured me seriously enough that I was hospitalized. I wound up in countless physical situations and was always able to get the perp into cuffs.

It was nonlethal force to effect arrest on a person resiting arrest.

Being unable to even frame what happened and why is a big step toward colassal ignorance.

They didn’t initailly take him down in order to arrest him, they took him down because he resisted the initial arrest.

You are willfully skipping that step in the process of what happened.

Funny how the cop haters, at one moment say “Don’t trust the media”, then take what the media says as gospel when it comes to cops.

Funny how the small government conservatives, at one moment say “Don’t trust the government”, then take what the cops say as gospel when it comes to big government, union cops.

Bo is on Imus’s show once a week, has been for a very long time.

He is a character.

But he knows what he is talking about. From the ground

Private medicine. Pay out of pocket. everyone.

No more Medicare, which was the start of this mess.

Then everyone will be out of everyone’s business, people can have as many kids as they want without being told not to have more kids.

No one will be pressured to not smoke due to others paying for their medical care.

But people ewould stop smoking - which started after third party payer came in.

And people will watch what they eat and do, which they did before third party payer came in.

And By the way, it has been shown that people who smoke die long before the burden for medical care comes into factor - generally speaking

You are skipping the fact that in NYC, business owners have to pay protection to the government and the mafia and the cops work as enforcers for both. It’s un american to bow before either.

“Depends on what the definition of choke is.”

There are many types of chokes and just because the cop didnt use the one that NYC banned doesn’t mean it wasnt a “choke”. The real issue is that GARNER WAS NOT CHOKED TO DEATH. The choke was applied for a few seconds during which he never lost consciousness. The choke is therefore a red herring being used by REDS to stir up trouble. He seems to have died from positional asphyxiation which the cops should have been aware of as a risk for someone that size and that means possible negligent homicide.

Honest Question for all the men here.. and maybe a few women

Have you ever been in a Bar Fight?..

Or really more deal with a belligerent drunk that was causing a problem that you had to get control of?

Ive had several time that ive had to take down or control somebody just like this cop did...

Im a big guy and several time been put in the postion by the group to control some one out of control.

I know most men have seen the situation where you’re in a restaurant or bar or someplace or someone is drunk and out of control

They two or three guys maybe mor we all start standing up and watching... is this going to get out of hands?..and do we need to do something?...and sometimes you have to...either break up a fight ... or get control of a drunk...

And you do the same thing this cop did...

I know I sure did with one drunken male roommate one night that was harassing a female roommates

Nonsense. Read any issue of NRA magazine where a gun was used to stop a crime. Plenty of those folks killed the perps, no charges.

Or, you can’t breathe because you are panicking about going to jail, since you are on probation. Or, your chronic asthma is kicking in because you are exerting yourself, who happens to be morbidly obese. Or, you are saying you can’t breathe just to get the cop off of you.

It took 3 seconds for the cops to get off of him when he said he couldn’t breathe.

Nope. They got off of him when he said he couldn’t breathe. He continued to breathe and talk until taken away in the ambulance. Total time from take down to ambulance, less than 11 min.

He was a repeat offender, on parole. No arrest? Don’t think so.

Meh.

New Yorkers made their bed.

I can’t really comment on the details of their society, because I don’t even know about it.

But I do not like distortions of events such as these in order to evoke some emotional reaction on either side of this event.

For instance, it wasn’t a choke hold, he didn’t die from the policeman taking him down in that manner, and he didn’t die in the ambulance or after arriving at the hospital. He was dead very shortly after the arrest.

Truth is the only thing that matters. I do not wish to be mislead by those with agendas.

Once on the ground, it took 3 seconds for the cop to get his arm off of him. 3 SECONDS!

It wasn’t a choke, because it wasn’t a choke. The cop never tried to choke him.

And yes, i’d agree that he died of postional asphyxia or possibly a heart attack that resulted from the arrest.

However, trying to pin the man’s death on that single cop is wrong.

He released him with 3 seconds of hearing I can’t breathe. It is not like he was strangling him with both hands, nor was he sitting on his back for 10 min.

Speaking from your vast law enforcement experience, as well as your deep knowledge from having sat on the GJ? Sounds more like sitting on the sofa, watching CBS news.

Nonsense. He died IN the ambulance. He was response and talking until he reached the ambulance. He repeated “I can’t breathe” several times while on the ground.
