1960’s satellite imagery of polar ice discovers “enormous holes” in the sea ice
Whats Up With That? ^ | 04 September 2014 | Anthony Watts

NSIDC has announced the discovery and recovery of space footage of Earth’s polar icecaps, dating back to 1964.

The recovered photographs have yielded some startling surprises, according to David Gallaher, technical services manager at NSIDC, bold mine:

In the Arctic, sea ice extent was larger in the 1960s than it is these days, on average. “It was colder, so we expected that,” Gallaher said. What the researchers didn’t expect were “enormous holes” in the sea ice, currently under investigation. “We can’t explain them yet,” Gallaher said.

“And the Antarctic blew us away,” he said. In 1964, sea ice extent in the Antarctic was the largest ever recorded, according to Nimbus image analysis. Two years later, there was a record low for sea ice in the Antarctic, and in 1969 Nimbus imagery, sea ice appears to have reached its maximum extent earliest on record.

When NASA launched Nimbus-1 50 years ago, the agency’s key goals were to test instruments that could capture images of clouds and other meteorological features, Gallaher said.

The Nimbus satellites dished up such excellent observations, NASA eventually handed over key technologies to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), for use in weather forecasting, including hurricane forecasts.

But even with such success, data tapes and film that recorded Nimbus observations slipped through the cracks.

“At the time, the satellites’ real-time observations, including clouds, for example, were what people wanted most of all, for weather forecasting,” Gallaher said.

Agree. NASA has an agenda. If NASA were doing serious research they might like to look at the Navy mission planning for the arctic polar missions. Those subs were looking for open water/very thin ice that they could punch through. The Navy knew it existed and they sent the subs up there with the expectation of finding it. And they did... easily.

Isn’t NASA’s purpose to give Islam some self-respect?

How that can be accomplished is a total mystery.

Yes, I believe, IIRC, that Obama gave NASA the charter to show how Muslims contributed to the advancement of science, etc. or some such silly sh!t.

The man is a MUSLIM. Anybody that contends differently is a Muslim AND a liar - or just a Democrat.

Eventually, even the foreign nationals that put and keep the dimocrats in power in California will figure out how rotten the dim’s are.

Yes and before 1964 recordings were done based on what could be seen from the deck of a ship or window of an airplane.

Just like now global warmers drop a thermometer to the bottom of the ocean to take measurements where none have ever before been taken and declare the measurements to be the warmest ever recorded.

There are some interesting comments about that in the comments section after the article. Apparently there have been big swings in temperature in the region from ship logs when they started being recorded as early as 1924.

holes in the Artic ice may indicate volcanic activity in the area, or at least fissures.

You mean “losing” the original Apollo images? Yes well known. They even managed to “lose” the movies they took. They destroyed entire archives of Apollo data and voice recordings as well - taking up too much room, etc. Nothing-on-the-moon-but-rocks - we got plenty here, so who needs those?

More than you want to know:
During that period, spy satellites orbiting 100-150 miles above the surface on a clear day with little atmosphere distortion could not only see the headlines some Russian was reading, but also count the hairs on his head ... The Hasselblad cameras used on Apollo were specially made, with special filters and were looking only a few feet on the surface or 70 miles from the capsule through no atmosphere to distort the images. The many images taken with the filters are not publicly available, but apparently still exist.

What you see today are copies of copies of copies into the XX generation. Each reiteration loses data in the image. (They become increasingly pixelated - similar to watching modern TV show using a 1950s TV). The originals - the few that escaped the purge - are crystal clear. Which is the problem ...

Somewhere in some local library(s) are “coffee table” sort of books published in the 70s with second generation Apollo lunar images. Using a jewelers loupe, you can see details that are not present on recent images. Some of them have what look like scratches - these are not scratches per se. Rather, razor blade marks were something was removed (common image manipulation prior to Photoshop).

If you can get personal, physical access to the entire Apollo image catalog, you will find images out of numbered sequence, images which, following the number scheme, are missing, images which are totally black, images with the same number of the same scene, images with the same number of different scenes. It is impossible to accurately determine which generation which image represents. Some of this you can discern online.

Online images are JPEGs, from which fine detail is completely lost.

Which raises the question: if there is nothing-on-the-moon-but-rocks, why all the hanky-panky?

They had to give the project to find something to respect Islam for to NASA, because it can’t be found anywhere on earth.

The core of the earth is quite warm. sometimes even actively volcanic. Warm temperatures down below don't necessarily have any link to man's activity on the surface.
