Ferguson Is the Wrong Tragedy to Wake America Up [groan]
Time Magazine ^ | November 24, 2014 | Professor John McWhorter, Columbia University

Posted on 11/26/2014 8:38:29 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

For many, the main lesson of the Ferguson verdict is that Michael Brown would still be alive if he were white — that Darren Wilson’s gunshots were the spawn of the racism always just beneath the surface of the white American soul.

However, in light of what we heard last night, I feel that the Ferguson incident is instructive to America in a larger sense. The key element in the Brown-Wilson encounter was not any specific action either man took — it was the preset hostility to the cops that Brown apparently harbored. And that hostility was key because it was indeed totally justified.

The right-wing take on Brown, that he was simply a “thug,” is a know-nothing position. The question we must ask is: What is the situation that makes two young black men comfortable dismissing a police officer’s request to step aside?

These men were expressing a community-wide sense that the official keepers of order are morally bankrupt. What America owes communities like Ferguson — and black America in general — is a sincere grappling with that take on law enforcement that is so endemic in black communities nationwide. As Northwestern philosopher Charles Mills has put it, “Black citizens are still differentially vulnerable to police violence, thereby illustrating their second class citizenship.”(continued)

Ferguson “was the wrong tragedy to wake America up” because
the perps weren’t appropriately dealt with as the whole world was watching.

Police merely enforce the will of a civilized society, in the USA, as expressed through laws created by a democratic process. A republican Constitution traditionally constrained democracy from abusing minority rights. But a “minority”, by definition, does not set the rules. Those blacks who want to operate outside the law, transfer their frustration with civilization onto the police. The fundamental problem is rejection of civilization and frustration that they cannot change the rules. Yet because of low IQ, poor work skills, values and histories, criminal records and associations, drug use, etc., many find themselves unemployable. For males, the options are living marginally off others or crime. Police notice the high rates of criminality, and being human, come to associate crime with the visual characteristics of perpetrators. Blacks who are not criminals suffer unjustly by association, and it no doubt wounds them to the core. That is horribly unfair, and I wish that could be changed without endangering the lives of police and citizens.

Options:
1) Revise rules to recognize criminal conduct as “normal” and acceptable. Result: Mayhem; living standards plummet; civilization dies.
2) Pretend the criminal element is in the right (Obama’s plan). Tolerate/manage crime, without revising the law. Empowered by self-esteem, all will become productive citizens. Result: See #1.
3) Enforce the law rigorously; quit tolerating criminals; remove them from society. Result: Peace, justice, prosperity for most; unhappiness among leftists and relatives of criminals; very high cost.
4) Change the culture of criminal class and its supporters so they are educated, employable, law-abiding, self-controlled. Result: Wake up broke and victimized.
5) Any other ideas?

As to McWhorter — it is fascinating to see the effect of the GJ evidence. Denying Wilson’s actions were justified is no longer viable, so it’s on to narrative B. Was it all Mike’s fault? Oh, noooo. It’s society’s fault. No, Mr. McWhorter, but it is society’s problem.

Someone should:

Make copies of this and distribute to Columbia campus security.

Make copies of this and distribute to the NYPD precint(s) that include Columbia University.

Make copies of this and distribute to the precinct that covers where McWhorter lives.

CCing McWhorter, and the Columbia University student newspaper to let them know that the security forces THEY rely on for safety have been informed of McWhorters stance that they’re just a bunch of racists who should be prevented from doing their jobs.

If your fellow “conversationalist” had paused for a moment to take a breath (or given you opportunity to posit your POV),s/he might have had a moment to...oh, I don’t know...THINK!

Mustn’t do that, now...

From Wikipedia:

Political views
McWhorter characterizes himself as “a cranky liberal Democrat”. In support of this description, he states that while he “disagree[s] sustainedly with many of the tenets of the Civil Rights orthodoxy,” he also “supports Barack Obama, reviles the War on Drugs, supports gay marriage, never voted for George Bush and writes of Black English as coherent speech”. McWhorter additionally notes that the conservative Manhattan Institute, for which he works, “has always been hospitable to Democrats”.[4] Regardless, McWhorter has criticized left-wing and activist educators in particular, such as Paulo Freire and Jonathan Kozol.[5] One author identifies McWhorter as a radical centrist thinker.[6]

“These men were expressing a community-wide sense that the official keepers of order are morally bankrupt. “

Another thing these delusional jackasses believe is that I owe them something based on skin color. Another thing they believe is that I’m fundamentally racist, based on skin color. So What? THEY’RE IDIOTS!

At the beginning of the school year, the principal where I teach came in to our department meeting to discuss the newest mandate (from on high...or wherever the inane mandates about edu-mah-cation come from these days) which was to alert us to the need to reduce the number of black students that are being written up for behavioral issues, noting that there was a disproportionate number of blacks receiving such attention. EVERY colleague of mine (black, white, green) groaned. I suggested to the [black] principal that the underlying insinuation was that these write-ups were racial in nature, rather than behavioral.

Silence filled the room.

I asked whether we would be told how many of these referrals we would be able to write before we had committed some unpardonable transgression.

More silence.

I remember reading an essay by a black writer (don’t know if it was McWhorther or not) that included a description of the social behavior of blacks when they go out - how they tend to become quite gregarious, are prone to use language that may raise eyebrows, etc. I don’t remember what the gist of the essay was (racial differences or some such idea), but I remember thinking, “well, that’s going to lead to some separation of some kind. I don’t WANT to have MY night out ruined by some loud-mouthing regardless of whoever it is that is doing it.”

Our cultures are different - black culture and white culture. We share some things in common, but we also have differences. Some of those differences are deal-breakers (most of my mouthy students are black - sorry, deal with it Black America). As a result, there will end up being some separation (you can’t learn when your approach to learning is to be mouthy. You just can’t...not the same kind of learning done by the quiet, nose-in-the-book student). The result is separation - in my school there are fewer blacks in Honors/AP courses.

If your idea of a good time is to dress in “slop” and walk around holding your pants up with one hand while you’re throwing the other all over the place to the tune of some raunchy, angry-sounding rap song you are reciting as you swish your way down the street...sorry again, I don’t want to have anything to do with you (and neither does my son or daughter, both of whom are bi-racial). The result is separation. Who goes to a mall these days if they don’t have to? Who really wants to go to the restaurant on “THAT” side of town, when I can go to another one over “HERE” (even if it is twice as far away)?

If you get off posting on Facebook pictures of yourself with a stack of bills and guns and half-empty Old English 800 bottles, sorry, still yet again. You need counseling for that problem of yours...oh, and by the way, you look like you celebrate what’s wrong in America...are YOU part of what’s wrong, too? Separation. Please don’t think I would ever want you around, that I would ever consider you or what you have to say to me as something I NEED to hear/could possibly learn from. Nothing personal, but...well...it’s personal. I don’t like your BEHAVIOR. You can try to make it sound like I don’t like your skin color, but, it goes deeper than that...it’s YOU, man. I don’t like the way YOU behave.

Attack a policeman in his police car and bad things are bound to happen.

What kind of absentee dad would have neglected telling his child such basic information?

“Ferguson wasn’t about police brutality, and the President knows it. If he wanted a teachable moment this was his opportunity. He could have talked about how blacks are 13% of the population in America and over 50% of homicide victims; how 91 % of these victims are murdered by other blacks and how, therefore, “communities of color” are dependent on a police presence for survival. He could have talked about how one quarter of the members of the grand jury that chose not to indict Officer Wilson were black. He could even have attacked the racist assumption that blacks will naturally react with mindless violence to decisions like this one; and that they alone of all American minority groups will be exempt from censure when they do. There are many ways a truly “post racial” President could have spoken truth to the power of the mob that exploded in violence in Ferguson. But instead Barack Obama enabled it as his racist advisor on racial affairs, Al Sharpton, swooped into Ferguson to pour gasoline on the flames.” (David Horowitz)
Obama and Holder declarations from the first day of the death of the young Black killed by white cop were directed to incite the racial riots. Upon their conscience, or lack of it, rest the main responsibility for the Ferguson riots.

What about all the propaganda against the police? And why not defeat their brutality by being peaceful? And why not focus on improving your own situation rather that worrying about "injustice".

Who puts out all the propaganda that Blacks can't make it in America, because "the Man" is against them, so why try. That's the view in the "Black Community", which a a self-selected entity of losers. Any Black America who does want to make it, gets the hell out of the "Black Community". Rightly so.

This is purely a moral problem of elevating envy to a principle of life. That's for losers and losers get together and riot. They're like crabs in a bucket, when a crab tries to get out the other crabs grab him and pull him back in.

All of this is supported by White Liberals and their Black Partners, like Sharpton, Crump and all the other race hustlers like them. If Blacks started voting Republican, the Democrats would come down on Black Communities like a ton of bricks.

There are no Republicans, Conservatives or Tea Partiers in sight anywhere near Ferguson and they (we) had nothing to do with this disaster. Democrats, Liberals, Leftist, Race Hustlers and the Mainstream Media all have bloody hands.

What is the situation that makes two young black men comfortable dismissing a police officer’s request to step aside?

The attitude that an angry, violent reaction to the perception of being 'dissed' is an inherent right to being black in America. And that also is a leading cause of black-on-black violence.

There is a valid reason why Wilson first confronted Brown - he was walking down the middle of the road. All the rest of this column is blather because it tries to blame black overreaction to being dissed on cops or white America. Most violence related to being dissed is done by blacks on blacks.

Walking down the middle of the road...or just standing in the road, seems to be a favored pastime of our “African-American” brothers and sisters. I think that it is designed to get a reaction out of drivers so that they can then react and if confronted then act as if they are being “dissed” by the driver of the car. Mayhem can ensue shortly.

There have been many instances where I have almost hit said miscreants. Freaking assholes. There is actually something wrong with these people. I’m not a psychiatrist so I will refrain from a diagnosis. Assholes will suffice.

Its unbelievable that with all the talk about helping these young black kids that the solutions offered up by the left typically do nothing to address the clear problem with learning discipline and respect for authority. Its sad.

If America was half as racist as these people claim, for as long as they claim, blacks would be fleeing in droves.
