NYPD rookie calls fatal shooting of unarmed man an ‘accident’

A rookie cop working the most dangerous beat in the city killed a man in an unlit housing-project stairwell in Brooklyn — firing off an “accidental” shot that hit a young father in the chest, authorities said Friday.

“It was a pitch-black hallway,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said of the Thursday-night shooting at East New York’s Louis Pink Houses. “The deceased is a total innocent.”

With his gun in his left hand and a flashlight in his right, Liang entered the stairwell at the same time Akai Gurley, 28, and his girlfriend, Melissa Butler, walked into the same stairwell on the seventh floor.

The stairs were dark because of a busted light that had been out for three weeks, and Liang was startled by the couple’s presence, sources said. He popped off one round, hitting Gurley in the chest from 10 to 12 feet away.

Hot Flash: JBTs have used up all their freebies. What's the over/under on whether you have a SWAT tag on your black plate carrier, wear black cargo pants and bloused boots, an M-16A3 in the trunk, black gloves and at least 4 extra 14 round mags?

And I'll bet you're baffled about all the contempt mere civilians have for you...

"Akai Gurley, 28 y.o. — who has a 2-year-old daughter and a young stepdaughter — lived in Red Hook with his domestic partner Kimberly Ballinger and the two girls."

Meanwhile the story *also* talks about his girlfriend Melissa Butler.
Akai Gurley apparently lived in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Now I have got it sorted!
It occasionally gets difficult to keep track of assorted relationships.

Sound like political and AA hires. What could possibly go wrong?

I like the part that says Officer Fife fired into the dark stairwell then RAN AWAY... while the poor bastard he shot stumbled down two flights of stairs.

I hereby declare that firing blind and then running away shall be known as a “New York Peel”. Although it is similar to the classic “Iraqi Drill”.

Maybe there’s something going around—maybe some kind of brain eating parasite.

For any who might fail to understand that last comment of mine, there was some irony and sarcasm in it. Look up irony and sarcasm in a dictionary. And stop using words like “utilize” in reports.

Do they always put rookies into the toughest areas right away?

It sounds like trouble to me!

If so, the poor thing’s starving.

Red Hook section of Brooklyn is now regarded as notoriously dangerous?
I thought it was populated mostly hipsters who drink too much expensive coffee?

Some parts are gentrified, but the housing projects are a section 8 ghetto.

Especially when Officer Quickdraw McGraw is around.

Pointing the gun and pulling the trigger are deliberate actions. Calling it an “accident” is simply lying to cover your ass.

Since the cop was from NYC he probably never even held a gun until he was at the Police Academy. You can’t learn how to properly handle a gun in a couple months. The anti-gun crowd are reaping what they sowed. Don’t misinterpret that as a defense or the cop, it isn’t.

“This was a cop, so finger on the trigger is part of the job description,”

No it ain’t.

You seem to be very confident in your assessment. How many times have you actually dealt with NYPD officers?

I guess that extra heavy trigger pull that they require on NYPD Glocks is less effective than teaching them to keep their finger off the trigger until they have a reason to shoot. Notice that this being a Rat city in the North, there’s no big DOJ organized protest.

I read the whole story. I’m left wondering why the gun was even unholstered.
And if this cop is this trigger happy, he DEFINITELY needs to be relieved of being a cop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
