Congressman to Consider John McCain Primary Challenge

Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., plans to keep his options open for 2016, saying he would consider future runs — including a primary challenge to Sen. John McCain — after the holidays.

“My wife and I made an agreement that we would wait until after the holidays, and then we would have a family meeting,” Schweikert told CQ Roll Call in between votes Tuesday, his wife by his side. “The whole thing: whether you’re gonna run at all over again, do you weigh options for other things.”

“Like everything we do in the political world, we’ll do it very disciplined,” he added. “We’ll do it with math and data and polling, and go from there.”

Schweikert also suggested some of his decision “also may hinge on what happens this week” with committee assignments.

McCain has said he will likely seek a sixth term. Asked about the possibility of a member of the Arizona delegation challenging him in a primary, McCain said he expected it.

“I think many people are not ruling it out,” McCain said. “I’d certainly expect a primary. I always have had a primary.”

In the 2010 primary, McCain crushed former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, 56 percent to 32 percent.

In January, McCain was censured by the Maricopa County Republican Party, which accused him of campaigning as a “conservative” only to “flip-flop on those promises.”

Still, McCain would probably enter the race the favorite.

“My own personal view is that while he will not take the campaign for granted, that he knows how to win a campaign,” said former Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

Asked whether he wanted to serve in the Senate at any point in the future, Schweikert said he was not sure.

I’ll be watching this with guarded enthusiasm. This will be a big money race if it happens. Many across the country will give to McCain’s opponent. McCain will tap all his big money cronies.

It’s time for Mc Cain to retire. He’s served his country long enough.

I would certainly hope John McCain would consider retiring..he has served more than necessary and I’m sure his brain cells are very tired and not functioning any longer...

There comes a time in life to just plain....QUIT...

I appreciate his Military service, but have not been able to support him in Congress, especially these last ten or more years...

McCain’s mother is 102 and is still alive. John thinks he can easily serve another term or two. He’s an insidious oligarch!

Someone needs to get rid of the old dinosaur. He is stinking up everything. Put him in the museum of political correctness.

I made the decision to not vote for McCain many years ago, I have voted for less than desirable Libertarians, or not voted for anyone, when McCain ran for re-election.

If David Schweikert runs against McCain I will do everything I can to help him, as I did for J.D. Hayworth.

Sad to say, it’s hard to defeat an entrenched, Establishment Republican in a Primary. They have the network and the money. Any crusty, old fart who wants to stay in Washington, until carried out in a hearse, will be afforded that luxury. Schweikert needs just to hold onto his Congressional seat and wait until John McCain dies.

Don’t know anything about this guy, hoping he is conservative if he is would he garner the support of Sarah or would she choose McCain again, or remain neutral which would amount to soft support for McCain.

I love Sarah but I am not going to avoid the question, I understand why she supported McCain, but that reason has long past, and I never excepted the reasoning anyway, it was in no way good for the country.

I recently moved to Arizona and I absolutely will not vote for McCain. If he wins the primary, I'm voting 3rd party.

well John’s mom at 102 is only half of his DNA so that is not going to guarantee John will be around that long..

He doesn’t look the picture of Health, but hey, they have the best Health care available so maybe he will make it longer...but his grey matter is not working well for him..
