Gay Blood Donation Ban Could Be Lifted: Gay men may donate blood if abstinent for a year.

Gay men just got a step closer to being able to donate blood.

Since 1983, men who have had sex with men anytime since 1977 were barred from donating blood, a policy put in place because of the HIV/AIDs epidemic, which especially ravaged the gay community in its early years.

But on Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety voted 16-2 to tweak the ban, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, suggesting instead that men who have had sex with men could give blood, but with a caveat. They’d have to be abstinent for one year.

It will be the Food and Drug Administration that makes the final call, but generally the HHS panel’s advice is respected.

End the discrimination on donors who’ve visited other countries or have relatives with CJV.

Watch that drive the market for non-gay blood in the private sector. Prices will soar.

More health risk....for political correctness.

Nurse Kaci Hickox and Dr. Craig Spencer approve of the honor system in grave matters such as this.

Anything to damage or destroy America.

This is not incompetence.

This is willful evil.

Question — How do we know if someone has been abstinent for any period of time other than to trust their word?

So a guy who spent 2013 hopping from gay bar to bar can donate blood, but me, a universal donor, CANNOT BECAUSE I LIVED IN SWITZERLAND IN THE LATE 1980s when there was a mad cow outbreak in England????? Switzerland doesn’t import beef from England and I didn’t visit the UK.

EVERY AMERICAN TROOP IN EUROPE also during those years is banned for life. But the gay men who’ve been unlucky for a year are back in????

Abstinent as determined by self-affirmation? I don’t see any problems with that.

Just as an unrelated aside, ever notice how a virus will modify host behavior to effect it’s spread? Cold, ‘flu; coughing and sneezing, rabies; biting, ebola, bleeding and projectile vomiting?

You can’t. Sure worked for the Ebola patients that Dr Duncan infected didn’t it?

...other than to trust their word?

That's the case with all of the questions you are asked prior to donating. Have you been to certain countries? Have you had sex with men? Have you had sex with prostitutes? Etc.

It's all based on trusting the word of the donor.

Hopefully, they will test donated blood to confirm that it is disease-free. But they probably won't, due to the costs and the time involved with testing.
