Dion Waiters informs Northeast Ohio Media Group that he is a Muslim and plans to skip national anthems

• Update: Dion Waiters clarifies remarks about his pregame ritual, will be there for anthems

DENVER, Colo. – Prior to the Cavaliers getting set to take on the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, one of their players was missing from the pregame opening events.

Dion Waiters was nowhere to be found when the national anthem was being sung. He was absent when the starting lineups were introduced.

It was the first game of the season that he was coming off the bench. He finally arrived from the locker room to join the Cavaliers' bench a couple seconds before tip off. Folks started to speculate if he was injured, disgruntled or if this was his way of rebelling?

Turns out, Waiters was just acting in accordance with what he feels his religious beliefs are.

Waiters informed Northeast Ohio Media Group that he is a Muslim and that's the reason he excused himself prior to the national anthem.

"It's because of my religion," Waiters told NEOMG. "That's why I stayed in the locker room."

Waiters says he is rededicating himself more to his Muslim faith. He appears to be in a happier state.

Maybe he should skip everything to do with this country, and go to some muslim sh*thole and see if he can make the same money there.

He’s a hypocritical asswipe... If his teammates had any balls, they’d turn their backs on him whenever he walks in the room.

Man I hope so.

I hope he gets booed every time he sets foot on the court.

Home and away.

I don’t think he expected this big a public reaction. It’s unprofessional. He can make the same point in his private life w/o disrupting the flow of the game. Those seats are not cheap these days. People did not pay to see this played out.

So being a Musloid and being an American are mutually exclusive?

Good to know.

This proves that orthodox Islam is not compatible with Western democracy.

He’s just confirming what we here at FR already know; that Muslims are anti-american, and cannot coexist with our Republic.

You are correct about the seats not being cheap.

My late hubby and I got tickets for the Boston Celtics from his employer. We enjoyed the game, and found out later that the seats were over $300.00 each.

At that particular game, an operatic tenor (friend of mine!) did the anthem, and both teams stood at attention. You could have heard a pin drop in the arena.

And this was YEARS before 9/11/01.

See if the NBA has the balls to make standing for the National Anthem its league rules.

Then he could maybe be fired and avoid anti discrimination lawsuits.

I have seen it before when players leave. They get booed every time they touch the ball.

He needs to be booed at home and on the road
