NATO has sounded the alarm: Within two days chasing 26 Russian warplanes on Baltic and North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea. This is not prohibited. However, the flights were partially not logged in and not accessible for air traffic control. An expert explains the threats to civil aviation.

Unusually extensive maneuvers of the Russian Air Force trouble NATO: Four groups with a total of 26 Russian aircraft, the Alliance has intercepted on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Russian long-range bombers, fighter jets and refueling planes were over the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Black Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in use, it was the part of NATO. The maneuvers of the bomber was legal. Nevertheless, the sky bring the many jets also a risk. NATO warned that the unannounced fighter jets may even constitute a danger for civilian passenger and cargo planes. Pilots remain without warning a few seconds to dodge

The reason: The Russian military had filed neither partial schedules before the maneuver, nor have there been radio contact between the military and civilian pilots air traffic controllers. Pilot of the German air traffic control would have tried to contact the unknown flying objects, says Axel Raab of the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) to FOCUS Online. "The Russian bombers have not replied of course."

What are the risks of lack of radio contact with it, the pilot Markus Wahl has declared FOCUS Online. "If two airmen without warning with a rather slow ground speed of 800 kilometers per hour to fly to each other, the pilot just a few seconds remain for Dodge," said election, the union Vereinigung Cockpit is. Transponders transmit important information to flight

NATO had criticized were switched off for part transponder at the bombers. These forward as an automatic signal generator air traffic controllers important information to an aircraft, such as the identifier or the type. With this information, air traffic controllers warn pilots about other machines.

"The Russian military has ignored important safety mechanisms. Without transponder in civilian airspace to fly is rumzufahren as in the car with a defective harness, "he says. "There need not necessarily happen, but it can," said election. Backup system will not work without signals

Choice keeps the behavior of the Russian military for recklessly: "If Russian military planes in civilian airspace unannounced fly with transponder off, which increases the risk for accidents unnecessarily."

Not only for the air traffic controllers on the ground a transponder signal is important. It is also necessary so that the backup system was working on board an aircraft which is designed to prevent collisions, explains choice. "The system works only if both machines have turned their transponders, otherwise it can not detect the machine, and pilots did not warn you." The Russian military should have announced maneuvers

Even run a plane without the signal in danger of being overlooked by air-traffic controllers, because it would not appear on the primary radar: These radars were "a completely outdated technology," said election. Previously they were only used for air surveillance, today they rely first on the transponder signals.

The primary radar is displayed inaccurately, that a flying object is in the airspace. The Russian military was supposed to announce his maneuver and therefore have to make the machinery for air navigation clearly visible, is choice. "You can never rule out a collision"

Against the law, the military has not acted: "The Russian military has no plans to leave flight maneuvers, switch the transponder or establish radio contact with air traffic control," says Raab clear of the DFS.

He assessed the risk for an accident low: "a collision you can never be one hundred percent, even in civil aviation not," he says FOCUS Online. Nevertheless, the probability of a collision between a Russian fighter jet and a passenger plane was "extremely low". Tragic accident by misinformation

What happens when pilots can not rely on warnings from air traffic controllers, it has become clear in a tragic collision over Überlingen in 2002. A DHL-machine and a passenger aircraft collided because the pilot had not recognized before the collision. The collision warning system of the control center did not work for maintenance. All 71 passengers on board died in the accident

Just as long as oil prices stay high enough to pay for it.

Re: 26 Russian fighter pilot in two days [Putin war games]

Headline does not make sense--

"Sekunden können entscheiden - So gefährlich sind Putins Flugmanöver für Passagierflieger" translates to "Seconds can decide - as Putin's flight maneuvers for passenger pilots are dangerous"

Headline does not make sense--

That's why I skipped reading it although I read every aviation related thread (almost).

I can't believe a 13-year Freeper posted that.

“I don’t see the Russians gaining anything from these maneuvers except ill will.”

That’s easy...
He’s putting pressure on the smaller NATO countries.

Already fragile economies, already slipping into recession, and the sanctions have hurt some, badly.

Imagine how terrified the pols must be of looking at have to cut Social Welfare in favor of an increased military budget, to counter Russia.?

How many will actually do it? They have cut their own military’s to nearly non-existent, to finance the handouts, because Unky Sugar is protecting them, at our cost. How many will bend over, rather than face the wrath of the voters wanting their free schit?

if motherland is invaded they are engaged. not so much in the outer counties. the career generals aside, maybe most Russians’ greatest wish is to work for Google not to die chasing after Putin’s dreams.

I’m not sure Russia was exercising what in the U.S. is termed MARSA [Military Assumes Responsibility for Separation of Aircraft] NATO has stated Russia ignored normal safety procedures that has led to previous deaths of in crash with civilian flight.

Everybody is playing the game of smack Obama. Get a Republican Senate.

Russian air is deployed to demonstrate Obama is ineffective and must not be supported by a Democrat Senate.

Putin is smacking the boy in the White House around. The media tries to tell a deflecting story, but Obama is the target of the action.

Not saying the article was not worth posting nor you not speaking German-- I don't Sprechen Sie Deutsch either. The matter here is your decision to post such a ridiculous headline--

Funny, I just went to GOOGLE translator and put in the German headline "Sekunden können entscheiden - So gefährlich sind Putins Flugmanöver für Passagierflieger" and got the same English translation (Seconds to decide - How dangerous are Putin's maneuvers for the passenger planes) that I said in my #4 post from Bing translator.

It is evident you DID NOT use GOOGLE translator, so, where the hell did your '26 Russian fighter pilot in two days' headline come from?

Let us add to your above snark at me:
3- If you are going to lie on Free Republic, Mom, make sure you don't get caught--

I didn’t “snark” or lie. Entire title not allowed per space so indicated content... whatever. If you are displeased, just don’t read entirely your decision.

I’m not sure it is aimed at Obama as much as it is aimed at Europe. Putin has designs on rebuilding the old Soviet Union. That means it needs to keep Europe from making noise when it “incorporates” Latvia.
