Health problems, low education levels and criminal histories make seven out of 10 young people ages 17 to 24 unfit to become soldiers, according to the U.S. Army.

wait til the really big war comes (it will—it always does) Wait til the draft returns. The fat kids will be slimmed down, the criminals sent to the front, the stupid ones only need to know how to pull a trigger. In truth it might be the best thing for them. Those who return will be better for it.
Why conquer them when it’s better to kill them all and take the spoils?
30% should be good enough
The 3 in 10 who are qualified aren't interested. They're going to college.
But it isn't, the shortage of men enlistees is the reason given for having to hire the females, it even resulted in having take 42 year olds.
Fat shouldn’t be a problem; the Army will work it off you. I was down to 170 when I left the service.
Actually, its the ones who can’t get in the service who are going to college—on your dime.
It’s easier to get federal aid than go in the service and more kids are in college now than ever. Not that they should be-half of them can’t put together a coherent thought, but the professors love them. Kids can stay in school for years and live on the dole.
Of course most won’t graduate, and half that do still won’t get a job with their humanities or sports education degrees. At least they can never discharge their loans— that should keep a whole new generation enslaved for years...
I couldn’t meet the weight standard either - too damn skinny. Strangely, after that first couple months it was no longer a problem.
I said almost 50 years ago that I could’ve accomplished most of my missions with 40% of my personnel. The rest were a distraction. In particular, the Amish in the platoon.
1 of 8 Americans is using illegal drugs. 1 of 2 is on Rx meds. Crazy.
and yet the number of women who meet the standards is likely less than 90%
maybe it should pay more
also dump the peace corps and jobs corps and volunteer corps and crap
When American men refuse to serve their nation, they still need someone who can serve and is willing to.
The truth is that the Army has long needed a “prep” program for new recruits. Anywhere from one to three months to get them in shape for basic training.
The idea is that potential recruits are *either* (mutually exclusive), overweight or in poor athletic condition; *or* they are illiterate/math illiterate/have low English language competency. If they are both, no thanks.
In the first case, they go to a commercial subcontractor camp where they are assigned individual meals, and are extensively exercised, including strength/endurance, weight, and a lot of jogging and running.
In the second case, a different subcontractor gives them 8 hours a day of classroom: intensive English language reading and writing; math; and other subjects as needed. They also get daily exercise routines to keep them in shape.
That’s quite a headline from Newsweak. Maybe the two or three writers remaining are casting for conservative readers. I’m an eternal optimist, so I vote: Yes, they are. Thank you, Jesus.
oh jeez... you totally beat me... by a lot too... I thought I scanned through all the posts already... oh well.
