MOSCOW, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Russia has begun a large-scale militarization of the Arctic Ocean region, with a military command structure planned by 2017.

It comes after recent discoveries of oil and natural gas reserves under the ocean floor, and the possibility a potential Northern Sea Route -- an alternative to the Suez Canal -- could soon be established as global climate change causes melting of Arctic ice.

Russia is in big trouble as the oil slide is just beginning. If it drops below 70, Putin will fall.

Wow, according to that chart even the massive post-9/11 ramp-up only made up half of what Clinton eviscerated from our military.

Nothing like a fantasy as basis for a chicken little premise.

Putin could take Canada's North in a week, with a few dozen ships , an amphibious force, and a few fighter jets.

While China takes Siberia? Putin's got problems keeping what he's got.

Amen. They know full well there would be 300 million guns waiting for them if invaded. I think they (Russia/China) will employ a containment policy of North America much like we did to them.

I don’t consider flying over something as meaning the underlying ground is militarized. Russians appear to be up to much more than that. I don’t see zero doing a damn thing. Actually not sure what we should do - even if we had a real President

Putin’s got problems keeping what he’s got.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Lets hope you are right, but so far, Pooty has insinuated himself into the Ukraine and Crimea as slick as a tick.

It will be all over in Canada’s arctic before they even know it happened, unless something is done.

And don’t forget we’ve had a Boomer up there for quite some time now——along with the occasional Fast Attack making a check run thru the place. It’s been a half century since the USS Sargo and then the Queenfish made their milk runs just to make sure the place was clean and neat. Occasionally I get a chance to ask an Engineman what the temperature of his cooling water was? Always most interesting.

The best solution would be to ratify UNCLOS.

I think the UNCLOS has too many New World Socialist Order provisions in it giving the UN way too much power.

In 2006, per-capita spending for health care in Canada was US$3,678; in the U.S., US$6,714. The U.S. spent 15.3% of GDP on health care in that year; Canada spent 10.0% In 2006, 70% of health care spending in Canada was financed by government, versus 46% in the United States.

Not 50%!

On average, Provincial governments dole out about 40 per cent of their budgets on health care spending.

Meanwhile, the remaining 30 per cent that typically includes medicine and dental care is paid for through health insurance or out of patients’ pockets.

This 70/30 split has been the trend for decades, CIHI says.

The report calculated that 24.3% of tax revenues was spent on healthcare and used that percentage to determine what portion of the taxes we each pay was used to fund health care – the “public health insurance premium”. (Canada)

Look, the Russians are a high latitude country. It’s entirely natural that they would have bases in their North. We have bases in Alaska, do we not?

I’m not sure that by Arctic, this article means exclusively within the Arctic Circle. I think probably not.

In any case northern operations are one thing, ostensibly annexing or invading parts of Canada is quite another. I’m not pinning that on you, but such speculation has formed a part of the discussion on this thread.

There is a thin line between informed speculation and complete nonsense, and some have crossed that line on this thread.
