California looks to build $4 million mountain lion freeway overpass

Several male mountain lions have been killed trying to get across a log-jammed freeway to breed

Conservationists are trying to raise $4 million to build a special freeway overpass for mountain lions in Los Angeles.

A population of the rare and secretive big cats live in the Santa Monica Mountains but are split in two by the city's busy 101 freeway.

There is a shortage of males and that has led to inbreeding on both sides of the road, with several males being killed as they try to make the dangerous crossing to breed.

Only one big cat - known by it's tracking name P12 - is known to have successfully negotiated the ever increasing traffic in recent years.

"He (P12) came from the north and had a lot of genetic material that was new," National Park Service wildlife ecologist Seth Riley told NPR. "Fortunately not only did he survive, but he then became a dominant breeding male.

"Our real hope is to have an overpass across 101. No one in 1950 was thinking about getting wildlife across roads when the freeway was built."

Given that the Feds tried to run a whorehouse once and LOST money at it, I’m betting CA would fail at it too... ;-)

Yes, that comment was sprinkled generously with fascetious.
(started to type 'liberally' but the sudden involuntary twitching caused a rethink  d:^)

I checked Wiki re m.lions' diet .. no mention of wetbacks, sadly.

So the elk come up and press the button?

OR it could mean that if you're flashing, you're liable to see elk ?

BUT dunno if the light's to warn the flasher or the elk ?

In 1950, the inmates weren't running the asylum yet.

$40 MIL? It will be ten times that much.

...Florida panthers using the thru ways.

There's no such thing as a "Florida panther." The original cat was nothing more than a smaller version of the American cougar/panther/mountain lion, just as Florida has smaller deer, squirrels, hogs etc. due to their not needing as much body mass in a warm climate.

That ORIGINAL panther is long gone. After becoming mongrelized by captive cats that were loosed accidentally in the 1st half of the 20th century, their genetics began to fail and they were well on their way to extinction. Enter pinheaded enviro-activists, who thought it would be dandy to bring in a bunch of larger, more aggressive cats from the West to improve the species.

And oh yeah, for "future generations and our children" the fed.gov and the state demanded landowners had to give up a bunch of rights, sometimes confiscating thousands of acres at a tie while creating draconian laws regarding fences, protection of livestock etc. etc.

Bottom line, the best thing that can happen for the state, farmers, landowners, property rights and America in general is if every single one of those mongrel vermin are extinguished off the face of the earth forever.

For "future generations and our children" of course.

I remember not too long ago when a mountain lion ate a young mother, and the mountain lion was put down. The loons raised huge funds to care for the ORPHANED LION CUBS. Not a penny for the poor orphaned children.

If several catamounts are killed on the highway in a location, there are too many cats in that area.

Trap and relocate the cats to Central Park in NYC.

Less of a threat to New Yorkers than Ebola?

“Conservationists are trying to raise $4 million to build a special freeway overpass for mountain lions in Los Angeles.”

This is a great idea! They can make it a dual-use trail by linking it up with a jogging/biking path. The eco-twits would be able get exercise and enjoy nature at the same time. Then it would be like a snack-bar for the mountain lions, in case they get hungry on the journey.

Yeah, they wanna make sure they call it a "mountain lion overpass," cause "cougar overpass" might confuse certain members of the human population and cause difficulties.

Quick, effective, and economical - usually one can only have any two of the three.

But, by delisting the “Endangered Florida Panther”, selling off all “Critical Habitat” and defunding all associated programs, Florida can achieve quick, effective and economical relief from the enviro-communism which is actually what the “Endangered Florida Panther Program” really is.

It was never about that cat.

It was about communizing Florida.

A new type of “4-’D’ Program” is needed in the Urban voter habitats, something similar to the “4-F” program in rural areas:
1. Define.
2. Deconstruct.
3. Denounce.
4. Defund.

Apply to any enviro-communist program.

Heck, they could cancel the train and build hundreds of these. They're more useful.

I take it you want more mountain lions in Griffith Park?
