Novelist John Grisham apologized Thursday for saying in an interview that many men imprisoned for child pornography offenses in the U.S. probably just had too much to drink and "pushed the wrong buttons."
Grisham told British newspaper The Daily Telegraph that U.S. prisons were "filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who have never harmed anybody, would never touch a child."

Everyone that bought the magazine or clicked on her picture should go to jail for 10-20 years and have to register as a sex offender for the rest of their lives.

Dude, the issue doesn’t involve the situation you described. We are talking about child porn. Odd comment considering the abhorrent crime.
This to my mind is comparatively innocent behavior to those evil cretins that create and/or go out of their way to obtain child pornography.
If Grisham is right that people that just view a few websites are going to jail, then that seems wrong to me.
If the only people going to jail for child pornography are those that are seriously invested in it, then Grisham should have apologized to the authorities for accusing them of overprosecuting, not to the public at large for being insensitive.
I have heard of cases where people urinating in public being declared sex offenders because someone was offended by seeing their private parts. Those cases are definitely ones where people were over prosecuted.
If Grisham knows of cases where people clicking on a few web sites ended up doing hard prison time then this is something that should be investigated. We want our prisons filled with truly threatening individuals not drunk perverts.
Grisham apologized for his remarks, which were disturbing as well as a bit too casual considering the seriousness of crimes in the sexual exploitation of children.
Anyone who is discussing this topic is referring to legitimate crimes of that nature, not some idiotic excuse such as, “I accidentally visited the wrong site”.

Nobody sends people to jail for clicking on the wrong website, but these people usually have hundreds and thousands of images on their computer.
“He went on to tell a story about his “good buddy” [note: from law school, took place 10 years ago in Canada]– “His drinking was out of control, and he went to a website. It was labelled ‘sixteen year old wannabee hookers or something like that’. And it said ’16-year-old girls’. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff – it was 16 year old girls who looked 30,” John continued. “He shouldn’t ’a done it. It was stupid, but it wasn’t 10-year-old boys. He didn’t touch anything. And God, a week later there was a knock on the door: ‘FBI!’ and it was sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people – sex offenders – and he went to prison for three years.”
Doesn’t happen by accident. This stuff is buried a little. Special servers, newsgroups, even special browsers I think. Mostly traded by e-mail from what I’ve seen from casual reading about court cases.
I am getting really annoyed by non-apology apologies and beside the point apologies and over-the-top apologies.
If someone has made a mistake, he should apologize for what he said, not what other people said, not what people claimed he said, and not what people thought was going on inside his head.

My guess is that he swallowed what his friend told him, hook line & sinker. Not guying the ‘If he didn’t touch little boys, it is OK’ argument.
