WASHINGTON—The number of new claims for jobless benefits fell to a 14-year low last week, the latest sign of an improving labor market.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 264,000 in the week ended Oct. 11, the Labor Department said Thursday.

That was below the 290,000 claims forecast by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and the lowest level since the week of April 15, 2000, when it was 259,000. The Labor Department said there were no special factors affecting the data.

“This is a clear signal of real strength in the labor market,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

There’s nothing like an upcoming election to decrease the unemployment rate.

Solution - hold more elections!

What about the 10s of millions who never re-entered the workforce after becoming unemployed?

Why do we not add that into the equation to get the proper 12-16% unemployment?

Disability payments have doubled under Obama as well because those folks couldn’t find jobs either and $1800 a month with free medical insurance is better than $400 in welfare.

2 weeks ago I mentioned to the wife that the election is near, gas prices will be coming down.

Under $3 last weekend in NJ, maybe I should open a psychic call in line...

But what is the employment participation rate? How many have dropped out, how many have decided to live off the teat of Uncle Sam rather than produce? How many are working for compensation at a fraction of previous employment?

Government statistics are as trustworthy as the people in government.

Well sure, since they don’t count the millions who have given up finding work. This govt is chock full of liars top to bottom.... Especially at the top.

I wonder how many out of work Leftists buy into this.

There must be some of them out there realizing this is as bogus as it can be.
