Shep has the Baghdad Bob virus. It’s spreading from the government to the media.

I absolutely hate that word. Protocol is sometimes used by the State Department for “why we have to backstab somebody (usually Israel) to placate some sand jockey for political expediency.”

It is a formalization of a ‘plan,’ set of instructions, rules, a regimen, procedures - whatever you want to call it, but needlessly gives the impression that somebody has gone to a lot of trouble to document and distribute the “correct actions.”

So, where are the documented instructions [their ‘protocol’?] Did they hand them out? Or did they just phone it in? Did they just wait for questions from the peanut gallery? Protocol my patootie.

The freaking panic is worse than the disease.

If Mexico or any other country, south of the border, shuts down again, I’ll be there for vacation

You make some very good points. It’s time adopt a wait and see attitude. We will know if there is real cause to worry in a couple more weeks. Hopefully there will be no more cases or deaths. If health care workers continue to get sick and die I’d say we have a real problem.

I believe the panic and stupidity by the masses is because of how Ebola kills people. Bleeding out, projectile vomit, high fever, etc. descriptions of Duncan and other pictures/videos of end stage Ebola victims are pretty gruesome. And the fact that according to the MSDS, Ebola is a BSL level4 infectious virus. Doesn’t say much for the folks who said it’s hard to be infected by this.
I’ve not heard of the bird flu, flu, swine flu killing folks the same way.
Just an observation. I’m not panicking just aware.

You have a disease that is killing roughly 70% of people infected, that is doubling every 2-4 weeks (despite being in a population that is among the most immobile on earth), and has sustained that level of growth for many months, now. That alone is enough to make rational people concerned. Whether it is gruesome or not is irrelevant. These numbers are potentially cataclysmic.

Maybe we are in a substantially better position, and it won't grow at the same rate outside of W. Africa. Or maybe it will, and maybe that 70% doesn't come down that much. Nobody really knows (despite professed confidence to the contrary). Rational people would be quite concerned if a disease with a CFR of 3%, with this steady rate of growth, were to appear. Numbers like we are seeing with Ebola are almost unfathomable.

The difference in ebola and the diseases you mention is ebola infects both the healthy and those with compromised immune systems.

The transmission mechanism is very similar, if not the same as the flu, and the flu marches unchecked across our country every year.

The flu does not kill healthy adults, ebola does.

The combination of long, and infectious incubation time , and horrific mortality rate make this the perfect disease to cause a collapse of our medical system, followed by an economic collapse that would make the great depression look like a picnic.

Ebola has simmered in Africa for decades, but now it is out. West Africans are isolated and very few travel, they certainly don’t travel to Cancun, so your little paradise was safe. Now air travel is spreading it around the globe. Everything needed for a worldwide disaster is in place. Being PC about it will only help it along,

Whistling by the graveyard may be of jelp to you, gut it won’t stop ebola, even in old mexico.

“The transmission mechanism is very similar, if not the same as the flu ...”

NO....IT’S NOT.

It is transmitted, Primarily, the same way as AIDS and MRSA:

You contract these diseases primarily through contact of bodily fluids of another person who is infected.

MRSA kills plenty of people each year: 20,000 and that’s just in the USA.

Ebola doesn’t come close to that worldwide.

MRSA attacks the healthy as well as the sick.

It took a friend 3 rounds of antibiotics and six months to rid herself of MRSA but, not before it ate the ball of her femure first.

She got a full hip replacement out of that.

Those of us who cared for her wore gloves, mask and robes whenever we changed her port-a-pottie, washed the dishes she used and for various other things where her fluids might be transfered.

Even when changing/handling her PIC line and washing her sheets.

Nasty stuff and we went through gallons of bleach and alcohol, which were used liberally.

The only way she could have transfered MRSA would be to sneeze directly in my face and some droplets getting in my nose, mouth or eyes.

Other than that it is highly unlikely that MRSA would have been transmitted airborne to the point you can’t even define a “probability” for it happening.

If you want to believe Ebola can be spread like the flu, have at it.

It can’t and 99% of the “suspected” cases in the news, at various places around the country have been benign.

It ain’t happening.

I had friends go to an extraordinary expensive spa about the time H1N1 was going to become a pandemic.

There were some very learned doctors giving seminars on it and one even claimed H1N1 killed his father.

Now, how are we to determine if what that chump was saying is true?

Dunno but, my B.S. meter went off when I learned he was selling health potions and programs at the end of it and none of it was some life saving program you couldn’t get at GNC.

The kicker was having dinner with him and learning his dad was hospitalized with pneumonia, originally and he was 93.

that stiey was bunk and the world didn’t suddenly start dropping dead.

same deal with AIDS. Oh we were all going to die from that

how could we prevent it?

Seemed everyone knew it could be spread by sex, blood body fluids and what made it so deadly was that it could be spread like the Flu! !!

Or, at least that’s what the homosexual community wanted you to believe, so you would fund a cure for their death style, erh, disease and deliver a cure, so they could keep doing the nasty with each other.

hmmmmm....we ain’t dying in great numbers yet and we were assured the world was ending ...soon...30 years ago.

so yeah, I’ll whistle past the graveyard and stay away from those who have postules, boils or are outright sick.

the numbers are so low that shouldn’t be too difficult.

“It is transmitted, Primarily, the same way as AIDS”

Wow, I must have missed the article about the 2 nurses having anal sex with Duncan. Please provide a link to the article you read.

Again, the diseases you are mentioning are killing largely the weak, old and infirm. Even younger folks can have compromised immune systems, a sampling of “one friend” means squat.

And if you believe what you are spouting, better make room on your mantle for several of your relatives, cause they will be spending eternity in an urn.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
