2nd Ebola case in Texas caused by breach in protocol, CDC chief says
Los Angeles Times ^ | 10/12/2014 | KURTIS LEE, MICHAEL A. MEMOLI

A federal health official said Sunday there was “clearly” a breach in protocol that led to the infection of a Dallas healthcare worker with Ebola in what is thought to be the first U.S. transmission of the deadly virus.

“We’re deeply concerned about this new development,” Dr. Thomas Frieden, head of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“I think the fact that we don’t know of a breach in protocol is concerning, because clearly there was a breach in protocol. We have the ability to prevent the spread of Ebola by caring safely for patients.”

President Obama was briefed Sunday on the diagnosis by Lisa Monaco, his homeland security and counterterrorism advisor. He later spoke with Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, in which he directed that the CDC’s investigation of the apparent protocol breach move “as expeditiously as possible.”

The White House said Obama also ordered federal health authorities to take further steps to ensure that healthcare facilities nationwide are prepared to follow infection control protocols in the event they should confront a possible Ebola case.

Frieden said the worker had been monitoring herself and was promptly isolated when she developed symptoms.

He let it get here under his watch.

Blow Job Clinton. let your mind expand.

Ebola Obama. let your mind expand.

Says it all for these two democrats and where we are as a society. If not being so dangerous, we could laugh them off of the stage.

In the case you didn’t know, in the medical field it is always the nurse who is to blame for anything that goes wrong with a patient. Most hospitals believe nurses are disposable. In the OR, when a patient dies during surgery, a code is called and the patient is ambu-bagged all the way to the ICU....so they can say the patient did not die during surgery...dies in the ICU, therefore the surgeon and anesthesiologist are blameless (or so the hospital system where I work believes.) ...death during surgery is a big black mark against the hospital...death in the ICU can be swept under the rug.

This is the second nurse to have taken care of a patient and gotten Ebola for her efforts. BOTH were in western countries and BOTH were at fault? Perhaps fault lies with the deadly disease and the CDC is full of it. Ban all traval from those countries to ours, stop giving visas. Stop flights from there. Do SOMETHING!

“Drives me crazy when they begin their response with the word “SO.” “

That’s becoming more and more prevalent these days. Annoying because when someone starts a statement with “so”, they are trying to sound rehearsed. But it’s comes off as phony. In this case, it probably is.

In my opinion, this type of disclosure is good since protocol is now front and center where it belongs — issues can be identified instead of concealed, and the inadequacies and failures corrected expeditiously.

Sadly, there’s the factor of terrorism which shouldn’t benefit from any public disclosures.

I suspect the protocols for protecting oneself from the disease are inadequate.

That has been a pet peeve of mine recently.

I first noticed it was annoying me when one of the IRS guys was getting grilled before congress.

Since then I can’t help but notice it being used in 2 types of situations.... 1. People who think they are smarter and are trying to talk “down” to others
2. People who are stalling while they mentally search for an answer...usually a bs answer

I’m guessing the mask may not be the protection they think it is

or

the virus is spreading through the air to the room where they are undressing

The nurse was testing herself for fever and on top of the development. I pray she can be saved. Prayers for those who have to care for her as well.

"The White House said Obama also ordered federal health authorities to take further steps to ensure that healthcare facilities nationwide are prepared to follow infection control protocols in the event they should confront a possible Ebola case."

While I agree with what Obama is doing in principle, it remains that since the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate the intrastate medical practice, Obama is once again unconstitutionally expanding the federal government's powers.

As an EMT who is on duty right now, I am not please to hear this. Another reason to retire.

In a stateside major hospital, with everyone focused and watching ONE patient, with CDC knowing the whole country is watching via media, a trained healthcare professional becomes a new victim. All the best drugs, the best PPE, the most knowledgable supervision couldn't keep the genie in the bottle.

Now let's send hundreds/thousands of only semi-trained soldiers into a 3rd world armpit with primitive facilities and thousands of victims, only some of them identified and under doctor's care, the rest loose on the streets. What results should we expect?

The Spanish nurse who contracted Ebola admitted she touched her bare face with her gloved hand. That is a breach of protocol and it was clearly enough to infect herself.

This is not a case of “blaming the nurse,” rather it is blame the disease. It is highly contagious in regard to the manner in which it is transmitted. Every level of medical personnel that comes into contact with an Ebola patient must monitor themselves for signs of infection. In the day to day routine of patient care you can sometimes make a tiny error that you do not realize until after you become ill.

I wonder if these suits they are referring to as “haz-mat” are the real haz-mat suits my husband had to train in for work. I doubt it. Real haz-mat gear is impervious, no seams, boots and gloves attached too, I believe. Respirator on your back, you get enclosed in this by another person and the purpose of it is to go into an area where there is stuff that can kill you if you breathe it.

I don’t believe they are using real haz-mat gear. Highly impractical, expensive and a real inconvenience to work in.

What is probably used is a type of gown similar to the ones worn in the operating room that do breathe a bit, have knit cuffs and you put gloves on that go up over the cuffs. Neck ties, mask, maybe a pant or leg cover element too. Lots of chances for contamination if this bug is small enough to go through the fabrics. I also think that it is airborne.
