CDC Chief: Why I don't support a travel ban to combat Ebola outbreak {Deadly PC BS Alert}
foxnews.com ^ | October 9, 2014 | Tom Frieden, CDC Director

Posted on 10/10/2014 4:55:16 AM PDT by drpix

The first case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States has caused some to call on the United States to ban travel for anyone from the countries in West Africa facing the worst of the Ebola epidemic....

We don't want to isolate parts of the world, or people who aren't sick, because that's going to drive patients with Ebola underground, making it infinitely more difficult to address the outbreak...

A travel ban is not the right answer. It’s simply not feasible to build a wall – virtual or real – around a community, city, or country. A travel ban would essentially quarantine the more than 22 million people that make up the combined populations of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.

When a wildfire breaks out we don't fence it off. We go in to extinguish it before one of the random sparks sets off another outbreak somewhere else.

That is for the apartment dwellers.

The date must be extended for all those who encountered thing like the ambulance, the hospital, the vomitus in the street which wasn’t “cleaned” for several days, etc. basically, right now look for at least Halloween. More for the hospital staff who actually dealt with him the last few days.

The entire spectacle of checking people for a fever when they get off an airplane is so foolish I have to think about it to realize just how much more foolish it is than appears on the surface of things.

1. Check people for a fever that indicates active infection after they have been in a sealed tube with more than a hundred other people for the last several hours. AND you will now have to monitor the other passengers for the next 21+ days and risk that they may infect other persons not to mention the people who have to clean the airplane etc.
2. Find that someone is infected so you can a) send him back to where he came from on another airplane to infect others while enroute or b) put him in one of our hospitals where he can infect the medical staff, take up precious medical resources and has no means to pay horrendous medical bills and subject the private medical facility to lawsuits for a person who will likely die?

To argue that quarantine will hurt the economy of a nation such as Liberia that is already in the dumper is specious.

Nobody has suggested that aid workers not be allowed in to help in an infected nation just that potentially infected nationals can’t come here.

People have lost all sense of self-protection and self-preservation. Their political correctness is the death of us all.

The first rule in epidemiology is that you do NOT introduce infection into an uninfected area.

(the 2nd rule is you do not talk about epidemiology) </sarc>

However, from this CDC document they seem to willingly ignore propagation characteristics of human travel, mitigation factors and isolation by simple geology. I find that to be a reckless disregard for public health.

A critical premise of epidemiology is that disease and other health events do not occur randomly in a population, but are more likely to occur in some members of the population than others because of risk factors that may not be distributed randomly in the population. As noted earlier, one important use of epidemiology is to identify the factors that place some members at greater risk than others.
...when the Government becomes the risk factor in disease propagation...

One thing being ignored is all the kids infected, getting paralysis, and starting to die from the enterovirus.

If nobody in Dallas contracts Ebola, I will really be wondering.

I hope they don’t, but I have wondered for a couple weeks now why Duncan was not moved to one of the 4 biocontainment hospitals like the young man flown to Nebraska from Liberia. Why send him there and not Duncan too?

Makes no sense.

Which is just part of why I've come to the opinion this is a fabricated crisis, borne of a genuine (as opposed to fictitious) threat. Ebola really is the perfect terror disease when constructed from a population-control standpoint (instill fear in the population for the purpose of _____ [fill in the blank]). Whooda thunk the next terror attack would come from within our own government, or that the 'domestic terror threat' they heaped on us was really just introspective from those that wrote the reports...true desperation of those in control seeking to maintain that control. People need to become outraged. My .02.

“2) They want this disaster to happen.’

The more they try to spin it the more it becomes obvious this is true.

Ebola isn’t spreading through incompetence, the spread is intentional.

This started with allowing illegals with for the most part non-life threating diseases to pour into the country unchecked and has now progressed to a deadly life threatening disease to come into the country.

The fact this outbreak of Ebola almost died out naturally, like it has all other times, then came back with a vengeance might suggest it is being used as a weapon.

Frieden isn't a real doctor speaking. He is a bureaucratic doctor with a political agenda. He is a Nanny Bloomberg toady whose big claim to fame is his war against smokers, Big Gulps, and trans fats in New York.

Why should we believe anything he says?

In this Op-Ed, Dr. Frieden puts forth a number of unsubstantiated straw-man arguments before he gets to his real, politically-driven motive: “Casting too wide a net, such as invoking travel bans, would only provide an illusion of security and would lead to prejudice and stigma around those in West Africa.”
In point of fact, a travel ban only FROM West Africa could easily exempt returning aid workers and US citizens, after they have been appropriately screened at their point of origin, and quarantined in Africa (if necessary) before getting on a plane home. Such a ban could also easily allow for special aid-related charter and/or military flights, thus not inhibiting the attempt to stop the disease at its source.
Such a ban FROM affected countries in Africa would not negate or abrogate all screening and other measures currently in place.
Dr. Frieden is well-advised to recall the role of hubris in the downfall of tragic heroes in ancient Greek literature.
