Smack talk to get out of jury duty lands man in jail cell or How a Liberal Becomes a Conservative

Memo to future jurors: This may be the most disastrous way to get out of jury duty.

A Douglas County juror grew increasingly panicked this week as the brief trial of a sex offender, accused of failing to register, spilled into a second day.

The trial began Wednesday with the juror mentioning how he didn’t want to miss work because of all the bills he had to pay.

It ended Thursday with the juror in a jail cell, a judge fuming, veteran court officials shaking their heads and the sex offender acquitted.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said prosecutor Tom McKenney, who has been practicing for 36 years.

This is not like 1926. My grandfather got called three or four times in the 1920s....and then never got called again. He didn’t mind missing two or three days here or there, from the farm.

Today? Some guys are on a tight budget, and just missing eight hours means the electrical bill doesn’t get paid this month. I think within twenty years....we will have to agree to pay the hours/pay missed by a guy when he’s forced onto a jury.

I personally don’t think anyone under the age of thirty ought to be called to be on a jury....because of their limited life experience.

One can avoid jury duty, but that is not the way to do it. Foolish.

When being interviewed for jury duty, all you have to do is casually mention that you are associated with the TEA Party movement and the defense attorney will seek to have you relieved.

How? Postponements are easy...how do you get out of it altogether?

The Merkun Jesters Systum is a joke and a clown show. It's all to fool the peasants into believing that they "have a say" in what's going on.

How many arrests in the IRS & EPA missing documents scandals?

Bill Clinton just getting out of prison for his perjury conviction? LOL! :)

I think all potential jurors should be retirees. They can meet at the local mall, given free coffee and doughnuts then bussed over to the court house........

And while they're waiting to be called, they can play bingo! Win win for everyone.....

Or mention you are a believer in jury nullification.

Jury Nullification is usually the quickest ticket out.

Though I wouldn’t mind being on a jury. Never been called though.

By that judge a drink!!!

So, the black-robed clown is pretty good at pointing out certain portions of the Constitution that he agrees with.

I'd like to sit the judge down and explain the Declaration of Independence to him, and jail him for Contempt of American History.

"The judge noted that the U.S. Constitution requires two things of most citizens: to submit to a draft in times of war and to serve on a jury."

Where? I thought the US no longer had involuntary servitude or a military draft.

("Most citizens". When I was last called for jury duty it was my impression that there was a noticeable under-representation of minority individuals in the jury room compared to my county's population demographics.)

Just follow every answer you give during jury selection with, “Why do you ask?”

Better look again, there is still a Selective Service and 18 year olds are required to register for the draft.

Just because no one is being drafted today doesn’t mean they can’t be tomorrow. The law is still in effect, just not being utilized, for now.

No, that would not end well. What worked for me though was on the way in to the courtroom several of us were discussing our favorite methods of execution. Not pre-judging the case of course, but I think the defense lawyer may have overheard us and advised the guy to plead guilty.

The only times I got seated on the jury was when defense counsel had run out of challenges.

I showed up in jacket & tie & identified myself as “Army reservist, Vietnam veteran”.

Prosecution rubbed his hands with glee & grinned, “Present the juror”. Defense rolled her eyes & exclaimed, “Excuse the juror!”.

;^)

years ago there was a guy who didn;’t want to serve on a jury. IIRC it was a murder trial. he was ordered to serve. so the first day of trial, when they did the roll call, instead of answering ‘here’, he said ‘guilty’. immediate mistrial

Carry a Bible into the court room. Or say “I think if the cops have enough to arrest you then you must be guilty”.

best way to get out of jury duty: “if he wasn;’t guilty, he wouldn’t have been arrested”
