Another $31.5 Mil to Give Food-Stamp Recipients Fruits, Veggies
Judicial Watch ^ | October 7, 2014

Enormous amounts of taxpayer dollars keep pouring into a scandalous Obama administration program that aims to provide low-income minorities—already getting free groceries from the government—with healthier foods.

It’s part of the First Lady’s effort to eradicate “food deserts,” area’s with limited access to affordable and nutritious foods, and so far the administration has spent a fortune with no end in sight to the cash flow. Announced just a few weeks ago, the latest allocation is for $31.5 million to “create projects that increase the purchase of fruits and vegetables among low-income consumers” that already get food stamps from American taxpayers. This will be accomplished by providing “incentives” at the point of purchase, according to the government’s announcement.Officially the funds have been coined Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive grants.

Judicial Watch has reported extensively on this outrageous waste of public funds, which is part of a $4.5 billion law pushed through by Michelle Obama to provide affordable healthy fare such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk in neighborhoods determined by the administration to be “food deserts.” The ultimate goal is to revolutionize the inner-city diet by providing fresh government-subsidized produce and grilled lean meats as alternatives to greasy, fried foods that tend to me more popular in those areas, presumably because they’re cheaper

Although the administration continues dedicating huge sums to this costly initiative it’s failing miserably , according to an academic study made public earlier this year. The probe focused on Philadelphia, an area that’s received a chunk of money to eradicate food deserts. Besides getting cash from the First Lady’s measure, the area has also received generous grants from a $15 billion fund tied to the president’s disastrous healthcare law as well as stimulus money to combat obesity. The funds have helped build new markets and added healthy food options to convenience stores in the city’s low-income neighborhoods.

However, the effort has not paid off. Residents of the underserved areas are no healthier after getting their government-funded fruits and veggies, the study found. After six months, there was no significant improvement in the body-mass index of local residents or in their consumption of fruits and vegetables, according to the academic researchers. The extensive probe considered more than 1,000 Philadelphia residents who lived in areas once considered food deserts because there were no affordable healthy things to eat. Uncle Sam’s lofty investment made no difference, but won’t stop the dollars from rolling in.

Besides creating projects to boost fruit and veggie consumption in the inner-city, the new $31.5 million allocation will also fund programs that test strategies to help “our understanding of how best to increase the purchase” of these healthy items by food-stamp recipients. Sales marketing will also be a big part of this initiative, evidently to spread the word among food-stamp recipients that healthy fare is on the house. The term food-stamp is not actually used because the Obama administration banned it and replaced it with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to eliminate the stigma associated with the welfare benefit.

Under Obama the nation’s food-stamp rolls have grown immensely and a record-number of people—some 47 million—get free groceries from the government. This costs an astounding $80 billion a year. As is typical with these types of bloated government programs, fraud and corruption has tainted this one, which is run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA Inspector General has revealed that many food-stamp recipients use their welfare benefit to buy drugs, weapons and other contraband and that some trade food stamps for reduced amounts of cash. Last year JW reported that illegal immigrants have received food stamps by the vanload for decades. A former certification case worker charged with vetting applicants in north Florida and Indiana provided JW with the alarming information.

“Powdered Milk, 5 lbs bag of flour, Large Can of Pinto Beans and a brick of Government Cheese.”

Mix together in large washtub, add 2 gallons of water and let stand overnight.

Drain excess water and bake at 175 deg for about 20 min.

Serve warm with lots of salt.

Yep, look at the fits people are having right now in Ferguson, MO threatening there’ll be ‘hell to pay’ if stores they looted and/or burned down aren’t reopened.

WIC in some regards is too restrictive, such as making it difficult to buy potatoes.
But it is certainly reasonable to say “we give you money for food, you can only buy THESE foods, no Little Debbie or soda for you”.

I love going to farmer’s markets in the spring/summer/fall and I noticed that they now take “SNAP” Cards - so this is probably what Moochelle’s program was intended to do...Fine, get the fruits/veggies, but do not allow them to buy steak or pop/soda or candy or cookies or any other “unhealthy” stuff as deemed by Moochelle.

I guess those uppity obamas have never heard of fatback. They eat what they eat because it tastes good. And pork fat makes everything taste good.

Prepaid cards can certainly be programmed to be restricted to merchants and/or items.

Lets just give up. Have a government program to distribute meth. It would be cheaper.

Got this in an email last week...

This was written by a 21 yr. old female who gets it. It’s her future she’s worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare big government state that she’s
being forced to live in! These solutions are just common sense in her opinion. This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco, Tx.

PUT ME IN CHARGE ...

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place. In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22-inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem. If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

I love this one.
AND

While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

And yet magically it is Social Security that is "running out of money" and the military that gets pay cuts.

Plenty of cash for the gimmiedats.

+Like.

On the topic, I must say I was unaware that healthy foods, like fruits, veggies, and the various types of meats were unavailable in food deserts. I take it the people there feed themselves HoHos with a side of Pabst and Pringles for dessert.

You nailed that...And one of the reasons SS is hurting is because of disability fraud by gimmiedats.

Our military has been second to none but now due to the turkey in the WH and the traitors he’s surrounded himself with we may not be saying that much longer.
