The hackers are thought to be operating from Russia and appear to have at least loose connections with officials of the Russian government, the people briefed on the matter said.
Some American officials speculate that the breach was intended to send a message to Wall Street and the United States about the vulnerability of the digital network of one of the worlds most important banking institutions.
It could be in retaliation for the sanctions placed on Russia, one senior official briefed on the intelligence said. But it could be mixed motives to steal if they can, or to sell whatever information they could glean.

About a month ago....a Wall Street analyst brought up the fact that Russia is trying to build it’s own apparatus for stock transactions....and the intrusions that led back to Russia in 2013....they felt....were the Russians trying to figure out the inner workings of the stock mechanism in New York.
My guess is that the billionaire crowd of Russia are looking for an inside angle to getting ahead on investments. If you knew some Wall Street insider was holding a key investment deal to noon today....you could sweep in ahead of the guy and take advantage of the “wave”.
You have to remember....the Communist apparatus doesn’t exist anymore. Russia is simply a KGB-mafia-billionaire club government. Everything is about status, money, or gain.
We have a freeper who is FSB.
I don’t think they do cyber operations this though.
Maybe it is a different agency
...and conquest, rebuilding Russian empire. That is where the mega money and power to keep it is, a massive military empire with nukes and control of as many nations as they can control or conquer.
The Russian govt/military/intel will have much larger plans for our destruction including the destruction of our financial system. How prepared are we to counter Russia cyber attacks before it is too late?
Maybe we should be EMP’ing them now to take out their ability to hack our systems.
Russia has always been at war with the US. It never signed a peace treaty.
A big mistake on part of the US to not have forced Russia’s hand when it could have.
For what, the freeper is Russian FSB, I think it was a different agency that would be doing this cyber crime, it isn’t really what the FSB is geared for, they are more like this according to wiki.
3 Role
3.1 Counterintelligence
3.2 Counter-terrorism
3.3 Foreign intelligence
3.4 Targeted killing
3.5 Border protection
3.6 Export control
3.7 Intimidation of foreign diplomats and journalists
All Russian agencies lead back to Putin and his cronies.
I think I know who you mean, yea he doesn’t seem to bright, this is above his pay grade. He should be along shortly to post the FSB misinformation on this. 10....9....8....7....6....
That isn’t what I meant at all.
I don’t think this is their type of mission, or operation, they are more Special Operations, shooting, not computers, they aren’t hackers.
There was something about the Israeli’s saying Russia had hacked an Israeli govt computer system a few years ago. Don’t remember what Russian agency they suspected. I will see I can find it and what agency it mentions.
Agree with you 100%.
Russia is still our number 1 enemy.
Yes I get what you meant, I was just adding whatever agency it is, they get their orders from Putin. It is like one agency in Russia, The Putin Agency.
War against who? How many Divisions does JPMorgan have?
Yea what does it matter it is just part of banking and investment system /s
I wasn’t aware that the US and Russia have ever been at war.
Eid al-Adha in Moscow .
Technically speaking, we really weren’t at war with the Soviet Union. It’s always been the KGB.
Time for the CIA to start targeted assassinations against state sponsored hackers.
All I have to say is that the best programmers I have ever seen were Russian.
They have a magical knack for it.
