White House: No Ebola travel restrictions
The Hill ^ | 2 Oct 2014 | Elise Viebeck

The White House said Wednesday it will not impose travel restrictions or introduce new airport screenings to prevent additional cases of Ebola from entering the United States.

Spokesman Josh Earnest said that current anti-Ebola measures, which include screenings in West African airports and observation of passengers in the United States, will be sufficient to prevent the “wide spread” of the virus.

The chances of a U.S. epidemic are “incredibly low,” he said.

“The reason for that is that it is not possible to transmit Ebola through the air. … The only way that an individual can contract Ebola is by coming into contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is exhibiting symptoms.”

The comments were made after federal health officials confirmed that a man with Ebola traveled to the United States from Liberia on Sept. 20. He is now being treated in isolation in a Dallas hospital as public health workers trace his contacts.

Earnest said President Obama has “strong confidence” in the man’s medical care and the measures currently in place to prevent Ebola’s spread.

The big fear is if Ebola hits Mexico and South America – they have extremely dense populated areas and could not contain the virus. People would be fleeing to the US for help. We would not have the resources to handle this scenario. Not to mention South America’s economic collapse, loss of tourism, etc...

It would create panic and hostility here…

So when is this magic moment: Assume we have a patient infected with Ebola and destined to progress to a fully-exhibiting and suffering state.

In the progression of the disease, there must be some period time when the disease is non-contagious via airborne fluids, eg, a sneeze, and then some period where the patient *is* contagious.

Who determines that point in time?

And that is the entire point of such horrible, rotten undiverse, discriminatory measures as simply not allowing people from that country or having traveled through those countries to land in the US. Measures that have been taken for hundreds of years in thousands of cases, but now, today, in the face of this most viciously fatal disease, we are suddenly too smart and too enlightened to inflict upon some poor deserving person.

I think if you weigh the upside of allowing PAX from Africa with even the slightest potential of spreading the disease to the US versus the downside of offending their feelings, the decision process is not even close. That’s my view of it.

I think the PC/leftist mindset is that it isn’t fair that America remain ebola-free.

We should immediately suspend the issuing or acceptance for entry of all visas for visitors from west Africa. How obvious can this be?

3 key questions:

Also, what good is screening given an up to 20-day incubation period?

If screening relies upon questioning those desperate to get out of the affected countries and into the USA, how much faith can we place in the truthfulness of the answers?

If Ebola is so difficult to transmit, why is it spreading so quickly?

Then I must conclude that obama wants ebola to spread to the USA. This is bio terrorism committed by obama and probably cover for something even more atrocious.

This is an irresponsible statement - considering that we won't know how many of the 80 or so people that were in contact with Ebola-man will actually get sick for a week or so.

This is an irresponsible statement - considering that the screening that was performed at the airport didn't catch this.

This is an irresponsible statement - considering that the man was sent home from the hospital after doing his best to let the hospital staff that he had been in contact with Ebola.

While Ebola is dangerous, it is just not that contagious.

...said all the people who have died from it.

It is pretty much body fluids only and you are only contagious if you are sick.

Not true.

It is very easily contained.

Yeah, that's why there are no cases of it here in the US. (/sarc)

Oh, okay.

So, after an infected person’s 17 - 24 hour journey from Ebolaland, they begin to develop symptoms...which somehow (rolls eyes) go undetected. Next, they hop on a commuter flight, in the northeast (US )somewhere, and fly to a southern state. They happen to be sitting right next to or behind you.

Their coughs and sneezes and GOK what else happen to land directly on you, or where you touch as you disembark.

“The White House said Wednesday it will not impose travel restrictions or introduce new airport screenings to prevent additional cases of Ebola from entering the United States. “

Why, of course not. What would be the point given Prez Obola’s open borders policy anyway?
