Why everybody is moving to Texas
CNN Money ^ | 09/29/2014 | Les Christie

More Americans moved to Texas in recent years than any other state: A net gain of more than 387,000 in the latest Census for 2013. And Austin was the fastest growing major city.

Jobs is the No. 1 reason for population moves, with affordable housing a close second.

"It take two things to draw people inland in big numbers: jobs and housing affordability," said Nela Richardson, chief economist for the real estate broker Redfin.

Texas and other heartland states have two advantages that translate into affordable housing: Plenty of cheap land around cities and easy regulations that enable developers to build quickly.

Nine of the top 10 fastest growing U.S. metro areas last year were ones where homes were more affordable than the U.S. average, according to Redfin. Many were in Texas, Oklahoma, Utah and other heartland states. Five Texas cities -- Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth -- were among the top 20 fastest growing large metro areas.

Some smaller Texas metro areas grew even faster. In oil-rich Odessa, the population grew 3.3% and nearby Midland recorded a 3% gain.

"The summers are hot!! Hot...I tell ya. Like Fallujah in the summer."

I don't know what Fallujah's humidity is , but after living in a high desert for the past 20 years, I don't think any place with humidity like East Texas is on my radar.

I went to the DFW area during the month of August for a job interview...

I swear...I thought SC in the summertime was bad...folks running their AC day and night, night and day, all day, everyday. Practically sprinting from the bldgs to their cars to crank the AC...

I got the job, right back to here in the high desert...

We have ours in Alabama also. There is a new store recently opened in Gadsden, AL and it has tons and tons and tons of guns. Every time we go over there, the place is packed with people buying guns. The lady behind the counter told us the other day that some guy has been in nearly every other day and purchased guns. She is wondering if he is selling them on the side to people who cannot buy guns legally. Whatever cause, he has purchased guns nearly every day for two weeks. No he ain’t a muzzie.

The housing is affordable. The property taxes are the killer. Combined, they are almost as much as our house payment was in the Phoenix area, which we sold for 104K more than our house here in Texas cost.

I used to go skiing at Scweitzer Basin when it opened back in the ‘70’s. I lived near Fernwood, ID at the time. Northern Idaho is magnificent.

I’ve got friends in Fort Collins who within the next year plan to move to Idaho, specifically to escape the New Socialist Order. I think they judge Idaho as more affordable than Wyoming.

I have trouble believing that Austin is growing faster than Houston. We have to drive around Houston ever few weeks to see what building or vacant property is gone and what is being built there. It is astounding what is happening here.

Wanna know something “funny”? I’m not even from here...I was stationed here while in the USAF and after retiring, this is where I found employment.

It’s not “home” per se...but I don’t particularly appreciate the mob mentality towards bashing it or any other state for that matter...too many good folks who’s circumstances are what they are.

But if you were paying personal income tax in AZ, are you ahead now that you don’t in TX?

SZ...my post was not directed at conservatives. I’ll bet you are a pretty good guy/girl.

But I will say that August is probably not the best time of year to visit.

berdie I don’t know what part of Texas you live in, but Houston has had a great summer. It has not been over 100 in fact I can only recall a temp of 98 for our highest. We have had enough rain that everything is green and fall weather is already here. Will be having lows in the low 60’s next week. :)

The weather there is perfect. I know that there are also many former military living there, and that it is an important contributor to our country’s agricultural production, and so it is vital to our economy.

Also, you and Jim Robinson live there, as well as many other wonderful FReepers. :)

"SZ...my post was not directed at conservatives."

No, you were right up front about who/what you were directing your helpful information to..."I think all libs..."

"I’ll bet you are a pretty good guy..."

There might be some disagreement from some, but agreement from others...I try to be agreeable.

August would be a PRIME time for the libs to come and visit...let them get a "taste" and hightail it back to their liberal craphole!

Don't get me wrong, I like TX, a lot. I met lots of good folks, ate lots of great food and drank some really good beer in my visits...I'm just not into that kind of heat with 90%+ humidity...it would take me years to acclimate, if I ever did.

I’m in east Texas. I must concur that this summer has been pleasant for the most part. But we haven’t had the rain Houston has had. We aren’t as dry as west Tx...but we sure need rain...even tho we have had more than normal. I live on a lake and it is disappearing before my eyes. :(

Austin is one of the few places that liberals can feel comfortable in their sleazy lives. Based on this graphic Austin will be almost 400K larger by 2020

lol...I remember the ice storm back in ‘89. A TV camera crew set up at the 610 ship channel bridge, and you could just watch car after car after car slip sliding down like a glazed luge.
