A senior adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that Afghanistan will sign a deal Tuesday to allow American soldiers to remain in the country past the end of the year.
John Podesta, speaking to a news conference at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, said he didn't know if newly inaugurated President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai would be the official signing the deal for Afghanistan.
Podesta said he would sign it on behalf of the U.S.
The deal will allow about 10,000 American troops to stay in the country after the international combat mission ends on Dec. 31.

American involvement in Islamic affairs is counter productive. The locals have to work out their own consensus. It will be a long and bloody time before any rational person would want to voluntarily interact with them.

They couldn’t get themselves into a free and stable situation because the “moderates” are out numbered by the headcutteroffers. And a large number of the “moderates” are sympathizers with the headcutteroffers.

I’m sure the troops are thrilled.
No more American lives for nada! They want American soldiers and equipment to protect their asses then they pony up. I also feel that they should pay compensation to every soldier that is killed or wounded. If they can’t protect themselves they can pay Americans to be their police or they can hire mercenaries.
Incapable of independent, self-government.
That place is bottomless pit for money and blood of western powers who don’t know any better or else are capitalizing on their self-serving ‘concern’ for a free Afghanistan
I’ve always thought “planting freedom” as a way to resolve the middle east issues was a dumb idea. Even when it was “our guys” who were doing it.
I am not sure if it is possible in our lifetime to change places like Afghanistan enough to be civilized. German and Japan had to be bombed to smithereens, and they at least were modern people. Afghanistan is like something out of the pre-Industrial Revolution. Iraq is modern, Afghanistan is hopeless.
First they want us there. Then they don’t. Now they do. Enough already.
Billions of dollars are missing. Sounds like a good reason to keep us there. Karzai was smart, too. He got his stash and as it got closer to the end of his reign he blasted the troops to save his own behind.
AFghanistan is broke. They can’t even pay their government employees. Actually, if billions hadn’t been stolen they wouldn’t be so bad off. This world is a quagmire, politely speaking and not my first thought.

They do not have the Judeo-Christian frame of reference for what self-rule (with respect for individuals) is all about.
