The swarm of attack ads claiming $500 million in North Carolina education cuts
Glenn Kessler ^

Posted on 09/21/2014 6:51:25 PM PDT by eyedigress

Notice a theme? In the hard-fought North Carolina Senate race, just about every ad from a Democratic outside organization repeats the same talking point —that the GOP candidate, Thom Tillis, as speaker of the North Carolina House, presided over a $500 million cut in education funding. Tillis’s opponent, Sen. Kay Hagan (D), also raised it in a political debate.

In June, we first looked at this issue, when yet another outside group, Emily’s List, ran a similar attack ad. The Emily’s List ad, as well as two of these new ads, pair the $500 million allegation with the bogus claim that Tillis handed out tax cuts for “private jets and yachts.”

Now that the budget season has ended in North Carolina, it’s time for an update. The Facts

As we have said before, the jet and yacht claim is taken out of context. A major tax law negotiated under Tillis’s watch in 2013 eliminated a number of loopholes to help finance a tax cut, including a $20,000 cap on deducting property taxes and home mortgage interest that was aimed at the owners of large homes and estates. But lawmakers, under pressure from the state’s boat building industry, did not eliminate a $1,500 cap on the sales tax for boats and planes.

So true. Withholding votes and $$ is the only way that conservatives can have an impact on the GOP. Attempting to make the GOP more conservatives sure seems to make some ‘conservatives’ very upset for some reason.

OK, I read where he stands on the issues, per the link you gave me. But, is he “conveying” his message? Apparently not. The hag is leading in all the latest polls.

You really did not get that? I did the same thing you did.

*facepalm*

Maybe I should give up.

The state legislature has passed some good stuff under his Speakership....

No doubt. Why not tell people about it?

How does the state compare to others thanks to his leadership?

Give me something for my vote beyond "he's not a demonrat."

That doesn't go as far as it used to.

I’m not trying to fix any fallacies within the GOP. I want FReepers to tell me what is wrong with Tillis.

Nothing you said. A general observation here on FR over the past few months. This election here in NC is consuming and it really shouldn’t be.

You are so right, cashless. Tillis being in bed with Rove and McConnell is enough to make me suspect of him. We knew he would be a spineless “fence-straddler” not conveying a Conservative message because Rove and McConnell hate Conservatives. That’s prolly why he is behind in all the latest polls and will get his a** handed to him on November 4th. And the GOP Establishment talks about Tea Party Candidates being “not electable”. Yeah; right. Their boys are doing a dismal job of winning seats that we should win easily. Any candidate backed by Rove and McConnell will NOT be a Ted Cruz; for sure. They hate Ted with a passion.

LOL Anybody wanna see how a low info "conservative" works. Check out Din Maker's thread about how republicans don't have a message (Blanket statements) and pay special attention to where he drops to his knees for the single most liberal "republican running" (Scott brown)

So, you’ve been around since October 5, 2004. What does that make you? A political authority? You and cripplecreek can’t even give an intelligent answer to questions that are posed to you so you resort to personal attacks like calling people “trolls”. That is so immature; everybody who doesn’t agree with all you “old timers” on here is a freakin’ troll or subjected to you silly remarks. But, I am glad I was able to help your ignorant ass learn the difference in b-a-i-t-e-d and b-a-t-e-d. Have a good night RINO lover.

I don't believe You know the difference between bated & BAITED. The lights outside are on, you should probably go to bed.

BTW, I never called you anything. Just your imaginative liberal mind playing tricks on you.

For a variety of reasons, people don't see the republican party the same way they did a decade or more ago.

The current iteration makes voters compromise too much in order to fight against things they can't compromise with.

Those endless compromises take a lot out of one's enthusiasm.

I can finally understand why people just "go Galt" in November and now can even see why it can be patriotic and/or moral to do so.

At least Scott Brown is winning his race because he has a meesage. Can’t say the same for Land (MI) and Tillis (NC). That’s really scorching your drawers isn’t it cripplecreek?

I do understand some of that. I was getting perturbed if you will, at all of the attacks on Tillis that didn’t seem warranted. Kay Hagan is nothing more than a white female Obama working out of Raleigh.

This will not do.

Thanks for your input.

I’m sure. Well if only one-third of the population can name the three branches of government, they don’t get a raise until that is 85%.
