A Swedish priest has been fired after telling his congregation that people who support female priests would be rejected by God - despite the fact that his own church is led by a woman.
The Church of Sweden priest in Halland, south-western Sweden, was defrocked after a sermon in which he claimed that Christian salvation was only available to people who rejected the ordination of women.
The priest made the controversial comments after finding out that a reorganisation of the church in his area meant that he would soon be working with two female pastors.
The very idea that a priests sex might have a decisive impact on salvation is breathtaking, said Bishop of Gothenburg Per Eckerdal, explaining his decision to dismiss the priest.
Using the pulpit to undermine two colleagues in this way shows an utter lack of judgement, the bishop added.
The Church of Sweden has allowed women to become priests since 1958. The church is currently headed by a woman, Archbishop of Uppsala Antje Jackélen.
Take heart if they hate you, for they hated me first!
- Jesus
Truth to power. He knew the consequences but chose God over the world.
Note well that this is not the Catholic church. This is the church of Sweden. Funny how certain people always forget to acknowledge that or that it is the Church of England when publishing these articles.
So tiring with the unscriptural women priests/elders.
New world order loves to get Christians who don’t know their Bible all mixed up.
One of many "cafeteria" style churches where the members decide what "their" church believes. Dogma is transitory.
Maybe they omit these verses from modern Swedish editions of the Bible.
“Despite a significant yearly loss of members (larger than 1% annually), with 65.9% or 6,357,508 members, it is the largest Lutheran church in the world.
Until 2000 it held the position of state church.
The high membership numbers are due to the fact that until 1996, all newborn children were made members, unless their parents had actively cancelled their membership. Approximately 2% of the church’s members regularly attend Sunday services.
Sweden sounds like a marvelous place for other religions to proselytize.
Reminds me of a discussion I had with some woman “preacher” on Facebook the other day. The topic was whether women oght to dress modestly or not. At one point, she actually said that she didn’t think “people” 9i.e. myself) should be bringing Scripture into the discussion since she wasn’t there to “argue about Scripture.” She had no answer when I asked her from where else she would obtain wisdom about doctrine and practice that directly related to the topic at hand.
I hope you mean "denominations," not "religions" as in our favorite beheaders.
Oddly enough, if we were up to it, American Lutherans could send missionaries to Sweden to bring them back to non-established Lutheran churches, that could preach the gospel, provide the sacraments, and be expected to pay their own way.
God will not reject anyone who repents and asks forgiveness in Jesus’ name.
Amen. I do not think that women should serve as priests, but some of my own family have been true Christians, and still members of a Lutheran church with a female pastor.
Christ is everything. I believe God will forgive us errors in doctrine. It’s not as obvious as some people make it out.
definitely “denominations”, though in all fairness, so many nominally Christian denominations these days are closer in their doctrines to either comedian Flip Wilson’s Church of What’s Happening Now; or some pagan coven than they are to traditional Christianity.
I guess that if you refernce the Bible, he might have something - Jesus has an impact on your salvation. The thought that anyone needs a priest to be saved is repugnant to me - Jesus walked among us as 100% Man and 100% God and He gave us a direct route w/o the need for mortal intervention, except for the need to carry the Word that others might hear and understand.
Biblicly, it is a man's job to be the spiritual leader of the family and teachers (priests) should be family men who follow that meme of being able to effectively lead their families. The Bible also has cases where, men having failed at their duties, women have stepped up.
I would not attend a church where a woman was pastor/priest/teacher, but I cannot believe that God would desert me if I did - if someone has Biblical proof I am wrong, I would be happy to reconsider - just keep it in context w/o some far-fetched twisting and contorting to 'prove" the point.
